Hi,

I've got an old Dell desktop (Windows XP) that appears to be infected and is running very very slowly.
I've received some Google redirects to a gaming site. Scanning using SUPER AntiSpyware has turned up a Trojan, 'mwusbw32.dll'.
Also, 'ping.exe' has been sucking up a huge part of my utiliization.

My HijackThis log is below.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to clean this up, I'd appreciate it.
If I can provide any additional details, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your Operating System and losing all your programs and data.

Having said that….Let's get going!!
———-

Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 1
LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Attach.txt
———-

GMER

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
.
———-

In your next reply please post the logs created by DDS and GMER. Also…is your computer set up for a proxy server? Do you know?
Thanks, Jeff, for taking the time to investigate this! I really appreciate it.

So first off -
No, this computer is not set up for a proxy server as far as I know.

Second, it took a little while to get all the information together. I wasn't running dds and gmer in safe mode at first.
When I ran gmer, Windows crashed on me a couple times:

'A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer'.
A physical memory dump was done.
In case this is helpful, the error details listed were:

Address EC8623CB base at EC85E000 Date Stamp 4e21F298
uxlyapow.sys
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED AREA

When I ran dds and gmer in safe mode, everything ran to completion. I don't know if safe mode is the way to go during fixing all these issues but I guess I'll do that unless I hear otherwise.

I'm going to break up the log files into separate posts, just in case it's easier to view that way.

Hi aconnerty,

If you are able could you run DDS in Normal Mode and post those logs that are created? If you are not able to do that please do the following and you can run this in Safe Mode if need be…

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.
DDS crashed on me again so I ran OTL.
Here is the OTL.Txt file first:

Hi aconnerty,

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
———-
A couple things to mention regarding ComboFix-

1. As it was running, a message was displayed that read: You are infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess. It has inserted itself into the tcp/ip stack'. hooray
2. No pop up messages were ever displayed about the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

Here is the log file:

Hi aconnerty,

**WARNING**Unfortunately one or more of the infections I have identified are Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots or other Malware capable of stealing very important information. You need to stop using all Internet Banking sites, change passwords to all sites with sensitive information from a clean computer and phone your bank to inform them that you may be a victim of identify theft. More often than not, we advise users that a full reinstallation of their Operating System is the only way to ensure that their computer will ever be 100% clean again.

You do have the ZeroAccess rootkit on your system. This is an especially nasty virus that has infected your system.

If you would like to format and reinstall your Operating System please let me know and I can assist you with that.

If you would like to continue with the cleaning, please continue with the following instructions and I will be more than happy to help. :)
———-

Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
    • Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
    • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
    • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)
Here's the log file, Jeff. Thanks!
