headlamps and flashlights, sounds like cavers then, any low laying gases in caves that kill, ones they'd only breathe in by sitting? still no idea why cold beer would be different than warm tho.
does cold beer alter your taste buds or sense of smell? so if the beer was warm they'd have tasted/smelt the poison gas that killed them and would of stood back up?

Not that I'm aware of.

Standing or sitting had very little to do with the outcome.

How would they happen to have cold beer in a cave?
i know the answer i think, (google) it's what kept the beer cold that caused them to die. ;) i won't say any more and see if someone else can work out the answer from my big clue by sunday. oops missed your post tomk, i see you've already given the same clue but worded differently. :D
Hi guys, Wow, it is Sunday and you guys left this one for me? Thanks Terry1966. you asked the right questions. Ill take a crack at it. The men died from Asphyxia. If the men were sitting in a cave and they used dry ice to keep the beers cold. When the dry ice "melts" it releases carbon dioxide which would push the lighter oxygen out of the cave and they would asphyxiate (suffocate). Three notes: (i) I put the quote marks around "melts" because technically dry ice does not melt. Melting is the process that results in the state change of a substance from a solid to a liquid. Dry ice is the solid phase of cabon dioxide, At atmospheric pressure liquid cabon dioxide cannot exist, and since there is no liquid it cannot be termed melting. Sublimation is the process of transition of a substance from the solid phase to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase. So instead of "melts" we should say that the dry ice sublimed. (ii) If the guys were not in a cave they would need to be in a room with little ventilation open space and the Carbon Dioxide would sink and spread out harmlessly. (iii) It is also important that they sit since carbon dioxide is heavy and will sink. It would take a whole lot of dry ice and a room/cave that had no way for the CO2 to escape down low so standing up would make the death harder to accomoplish.
Well done terry1966 and otisx! That is the correct scenario.

So… an icecream cone for each of you.
