My computer is running painfully slow & CPU is running at 100% pretty much all the time. I found the ‘searchqu.com/418’ problem when trying to return my ‘IE new tab page’ to my preferred default setting. I searched it’s name via yahoo & found this help site which informed me I had a malware. I have full AVG + AVGTuneup & have previously done all in it’s optimization processes to try to speed up my laptop. I also trialed full version of Malwarebytes but it hangs.

In preparation to start this new topic I tried to follow your initial instructions to download & run DDS. However the first link didn’t work & link2 said it was a screen saver. So I closed the window & tried OTL instead.

I noted OTL was set to scan new files less than 30days old. Searchqu entered my computer 01Sep2011 making it more than 30days old so it maynot be showing up. The other thing I noted while reading through the Extras.Txt notepad was that the internal clock is set wrong. At the bottom are listed ‘Application Events’ showing the times an event happened. It seems the clock is running about 12hrs slow since it listed an event of the MBam hang as occurring at 10/01/2011 6:44:47pm when it actually happened at 10/02/2011 6:44 am aprox (this morning). If this time clock issue is not related to this current searchqu problem I will start a new topic in the correct category later.

Below are the 2 notepad files produced by OTL after the initial scan:-

Notepad files were too big making this window unstable. I have attached the OTL.Txt - Notepad file because it is 240k.

Below is the Extras.Txt - Notepad file:-

Thankyou for replying CatByte. :) I will get onto that when I get home from work tonight. Some scans are taking up to 12hrs so I let them run overnight. Please don't be concerned if no reply before tomorrrow.
OK scans done & files included. But first a small apology.

I had a ‘little’ unintended help yesterday!

My daughter who usually has no interest in my computer ( & didn’t know I had asked for help on this site) replied to a very overdue email from my security software provider. Previous weekend I emailed their help centre not sure what was wrong with my computer but suspecting a malware. I got no timely reply.

So after 6 days I came here instead & things became much clearer regarding what the problem was.

Well my dear daughter checked my emails for me last night, discovered the reply from security software people, followed their instructions, downloaded HijackThis, did scan, sent notepad file, got immediate reply c/- fix, followed those instructions & was happy she’d done a great job for Mum!

Upon my return home from an arduous night shift, she excitedly informed me she had fixed my computer problem! I can’t scold her because she didn’t know I had changed to this forum for help. She was just trying to help her overworked Mum.

Computer did run just a little faster but I found some remnants of the malware so I am continuing to follow your instructions provided as there is obviously more to remove.

After the OTL scan & reboot I got an AVG message of a severe threat level file name TFSWCTRL.EXE
I have allowed it hoping it is to do with the OTL software since that was still in control of the computer reboot at that point. If it is not related it will need removing too.

I also wanted to ask about another thing I found running in start-up list in task manager. It’s called alg.exe & I read that if it’s in sys32 it’s the real thing but if not it’s a malware. How do I tell the difference? Should I start a new thread about this?

Here are the scan files:-

no

don't start a new thread, we will look after everything here

please run the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
Here is the next file report from ComboFix.

My AVG wouldn’t let itself be properly disabled. It reset itself every 10mins whether I clicked on that or not! I hope that didn’t upset ComboFix. :(

Since it scanned I am getting this message everytime I click on a web page telling me I am about to view over a secure connection & no-one else can view this or something. It won’t go away!! It’s driving me start raving maaaadddd!!! :pullhair: It won’t allow me to click on “Don’t show this message again”.

I read through the log & it reminded me of all the old Norton stuff still hanging around from 3 generations of versions of Symantec on this computer. Plus a variety of other security softwares I have trialed during the 5.5yrs I’ve had this machine, all needing to be cleaned off even though the proper uninstall was used.

CatByte I only installed MBam as an alternative to my full version AVG to see if it could find the malware when AVG had failed. But when it never showed anything either I uninstalled it because there were really big conflicts. Will I reinstall MBam or will AVG be able to do the same scan? AVG provides for many varied scans & I have been using them all recently but nothing has been showing up. Also I am having big trouble turning AVG off. The 'disable' button only works for 15mins then it automatically turns itself back on. Many scans are taking hours. There are many components to AVG, some of which I can turn off individually but it screams blue murder!! Here is the list of components. Can you please tell me which ones I should try to turn off so MBam runs properly. Anti-virus Anti-spyware Firewall Linkscanner Resident Shield Email Scanner Anti-Rootkit System Tools PC Analyzer ID Protection cheers & thanks :)
There shouldn't be issues between AVG and Malwarebytes, they perform two different functions

it sounds as though your AVG may not be working properly.

I suggest uninstalling AVG completely through Add/Remove programs, then use their removal tool

http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arm_su…/avgremover.exe

Give Microsoft security Essentials a try > see if that runs better on you machine that AVG has been doing

(if not you can always uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials then reinstall an updated AVG)

Now download the latest malwarebytes

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

CatByte I've done the MBam scan. Today has been a very painful experience. MBAM & AVG obviously hate each other causing major conflicts & I have been caught in the middle trying to use this deathly slow computer. The difference after I installed the MBam was extremely noticeable to the point where the reboot almost failed. It took so long I was really worried. After the scan was done I had no alternative but to uninstall MBAM again before I could make this post. I also tried to do the ESET scan but it wouldn’t load. I tried to disable several things without success. I would allow the activeX but nothing happened. The window remained blue even after leaving it for ages. MBAM didn’t find anything. Log posted below. Re the alg.exe file Today I remembered a little software I have Process Explorer by Sysinternals.com I opened it & when I hover over the name of a process it tells me it’s address & sometimes a bit about it. I was able to see that the alg.exe that is showing in my processes is indeed housed in the sys32, so that is all good. But there are a few processes which I am suspicious of. (Itmoh LtMoh some sort of phone connection perhaps related to my voip connection perhaps?) jqs.exe Java quick Starter service, not sure why I need that running all the time spiking my CPU every 16secs. Without the MBAM running this machine does speed up a bit but it is still way slow as indicated by things like the cursor moving jittery across the screen rather than a smooth flowing movement & dragged windows moving jittery too & commands failing to operate. Also the message regarding the security issue is still coming up despite me trying a few things & lowering the level. I'm not sure about uninstalling AVG. I am only 11mths through a 24mth subscription however it shouldn't have allowed this Searchqu bug in. However it appears many machines get that bug so perhaps the bug is too smart for most of the security softwares. This is the first time I have heard of a conflict between AVG and MBAM I suspect your AVG installation may have been corrupted by the infection You can always re-install the program Uninstall it totally, completely remove all signs of it from your computer, then run the two programs (AVG is probably interfering with ESET also)
 Thanks CatByte. It will be 24hrs maybe before I get back here….just been at work again, now it's sleep, then more work, then shopping!! Also I sent a question to AVG re the conflict between it & MBam & hope for a reply before I get back to this machine.
Hi there Catbyte. I've just got time to post this before going to work. I set the ESET scan overnight which took 9hrs! I wasn't able to disable AVG anti-virus, nor was I able to disable it's overly regular update process which I already know can cause problems & orphans when it totally takes over. I have sent a strongly worded email to AVG requesting assistance at their earliest possible, but no answer as yet after 2 days. The webpage problems seem to have resolved after a few start-ups. cheers ESET SCAN file:- C:\Documents and Settings\Clarissa Townsend\Application Data\AVG\Rescue\PC Tuneup 2011\110927131709953.rsc a variant of Win32/InstallCore.C application C:\Documents and Settings\Clarissa Townsend\Application Data\OpenCandy\OpenCandy_E159CE89310547EFAA46BAFFAF8BD2C5\GameHouseSupercollapse3_p1v7.exe Win32/OpenCandy application C:\Program Files\cnet_avc-free_exe.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.C application C:\Program Files\cnet_full_video_converter_free_exe.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.C application C:\Program Files\cnet_smconverter_installer_exe.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.C application C:\Program Files\GameHouse-Installer_am-namcoallstarspacman_gamehouse_.exe Win32/OpenCandy application C:\Program Files\iepv.zip Win32/PSWTool.IEPassView.117 application C:\Program Files\pspv.zip Win32/PassView.163 application C:\Program Files\RealArcade\Installer\bin\OCSetupHlp.dll Win32/OpenCandy application C:\System Volume Information\_restore{FE97A8D1-F394-4EF8-A3D5-613A4515B860}\RP1203\A0103831.dll Win32/OpenCandy application C:\System Volume Information\_restore{FE97A8D1-F394-4EF8-A3D5-613A4515B860}\RP1223\A0106954.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.C application C:\System Volume Information\_restore{FE97A8D1-F394-4EF8-A3D5-613A4515B860}\RP1223\A0106956.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.C application C:\System Volume Information\_restore{FE97A8D1-F394-4EF8-A3D5-613A4515B860}\RP1223\A0106957.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.C application
