no i wouldn't say it's usual Elizabeth Clare, it takes me ages to write my unthoughtful replies and i don't remember ever having my connection fail when i hit the post button. do you have connection/timed out problems anyway besides when making a post here?
Thanks Terry1966! No, I don't. I can't figure it out. Sometimes I think I should write my posts on the word processor, then paste them in here so it won't take so long? Do you think there's any chance that the preview I saw was saved anywhere? Thanks again for your response and your help. :( Also – is it alright that I posted this question here and in "Software" with cross references? I did this so that the "Monday Madness" crew would know what happened to me.
OK, I still have not peeked at any posts since I started. I'm trying again.

1. We had a power outage Saturday Night

Hey! We had one yesterday! Don't know why, though.

2. (Car accident took at a regulator bank).

What does "took at a regulator bank" mean?

3. Obviously I couldn't go online to the forums so I decided to read a book

I admire those who read books for enjoyment & interest - as opposed to "required". It's the kind of leisure activity found usually only on the resumes of intelligent people.

4. (Nero Wolfe - Trio for blunt instruments).

Who is Nero Wolfe and what is he all about? What cool title! What's it about? Hey! I often play piano for a Trio of Stringed Instruments! (2 violins & 1 cello) At times we even have a viola too!

5. Rather than using a flashlight… I lit a candle to provide light to read by.

Why didn't you use a flashlight? Wow…reading by candlelight! That sounds intriguing!

6. An hour and one-half later…

We will suppose that you started reading and lit the first candle (X) at 8pm.
1h30m later it would then be 9:30pm.

7. the power still wasn't back on so I lit a second candle to provide more reading light.

Second candle (Y) was lit at 9:30pm.

8. This second candle was an inch shorter than the original length of the first candle.

(La of Y) = [ (La of X) - 1inch ]

9. Two and one-half hours later,

Now it is Midnight.
2h30m for X to burn 1in
150minutes/inch = rate flame burns candlewax

10. I took a break to get a glass of milk and noticed that the candles were now the same length.

At Midnight
(La of Y) - (Lb of Y after 2h30m) = (Lb of X) = (Lb of Y)

11. Another hour and one-half later, just as I finished my book,

It's now 1:30am.

12. the candle that started out shortest burned out.

Second candle (Y) burned out at 1:30am.

13. I left the original candle burning to provide a bit of light to get ready for bed by.

First candle (X) still burns on.

14. The original candle burned out after half and hour.

It is now 2am and candle (X) has burned out.

15. What was the original length of each candle?

I will now calculate the answer to this question in my next post.
I hope, I hope my work actually posts and doesn't disappear!
Here goes…

6. An hour and one-half later…

90 minutes has elapsed since lighting first candle
We will suppose that you started reading and lit the first candle (X) at 8pm.
1h30m later it would then be 9:30pm.

7. the power still wasn't back on so I lit a second candle to provide more reading light.

8. This second candle was an inch shorter than the original length of the first candle.

(La of Y) = [ (La of X) - 1inch ]

9. Two and one-half hours later,

150 minutes has elapsed since lighting 2nd Candle & 240 minutes since lighting 1st Candle.
Now it is Midnight.
2h30m for X to burn 1in
150minutes/inch = rate flame burns candlewax

10. I took a break to get a glass of milk and noticed that the candles were now the same length.

Since Candle 1 is 1inch longer than Candle 2 … hmmm
At Midnight
(La of Y) - (Lb of Y after 2h30m) = (Lb of X) = (Lb of Y)

11. Another hour and one-half later, just as I finished my book,

240 minutes since lighting Candle 2 and 330 minutes since lighting Candle 1
It's now 1:30am.

12. the candle that started out shortest burned out.

Candle 2 burned out after 240 minutes (Burned from 9:30pm until 1:30am = 4 Hours)
Second candle (Y) burned out at 1:30am.

13. I left the original candle burning to provide a bit of light to get ready for bed by.

First candle (X) still burns on.

14. The original candle burned out after half and hour.

Candle 1 burned out after 360 minutes (Burned from 8pm until 2am = 6 Hours)
It is now 2am and candle (X) has burned out.

15. What was the original length of each candle?

Total Candlelight Minutes = Candle 1 = 6 Hours & Candle 2 = 4 Hours

Now… how long does it take Candle 1 to burn 1 inch?
when they were both the same length candle1 l=l-4*l/6 candle2 (l-1)=(l-1)-2.5*(l-1)/4 now just find a number that when replaced for l both equations equal each other, this number will be the length of candle 1. clue l is greater than 2 and less than 12.
@Elizabeth Clare,

What does "took at a regulator bank" mean?

It means I made a typo. It should say… "took out a regulator bank".

A regulator bank is something you will see along power transmission lines. typically you will see a couple of power poles close together with a beam between them that has three large appliances on them the look kind of like larger transformers. These regulators "absorb" the power spikes in the transmission lines (among other things).

Who is Nero Wolfe and what is he all about?

Nero Wolfe is the "hero" of a series of books written by Rex Stout. He is a private investigator who's cases are told by his secretary/sidekick Archie Goodwin. Nero weighs in at 1/7th of a ton and he never leaves his house on business. Archie's job is to gather the information and provide it to Nero who then solves the case simply by thinking about it. Archie is also in charge of coercing the various witnesses and suspects into coming to Nero Wolfe's house for him to "grill" or reveal the solution to.

Why didn't you use a flashlight?

Because you have to hold the stupid thing and then the batteries go dead. Candlelight is much more relaxing.

We're all interested in seeing the final installment of your solution.

@Everybody else….
Well done otisx! Those are the correct original dimensions of the candles.

Seeing as how I was off "collecting the rent" this weekend, and I did procure a 4 point…. instead of cookies, maybe venison stake would be appropriate? It probably isn't politically correct (though it is delicious) so how about Reese's pieces?

Hey everyone! :wavey:

Just dropped in to say hello. I started my first uni unit 6 weeks ago and although it is nothing like I expected, I'm absolutely loving the challenge! Anxiously waiting for the results of my first assignment which are due back on Tuesday.

Anyway, going to go have a browse around, my head needs a break from the infinite research-read-write

Bye :adios: , have fun, and I will pop in again and might even have a crack at a Monday Madness someday soon! :friends:

nice to see you chrissy, yes pop in more often and good luck with your results.
