Well hi again guys.. Been a long time since I have had the need of your services, but alas I,m in trouble. System is my Asus Laptop running Windows7. I cannot access any WWW pages and cannot run MBAM or Avast, have tried to open Hijack but cannot, system restore faults also. No idea how this started as I am very cautious and always run Mbam, CCleaner and ATV every day. I await your reply Cheers Tomt
Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your Operating System and losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:

These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
with Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

Having said that….Let's get going!!
———-

Print out these instructions as we may need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 5 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.
  • rkill.exe
  • rkill.com
  • rkill.scr
  • WiNlOgOn.exe
  • uSeRiNiT.exe

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 1
LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Right-click and Run as Administrator dds to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Attach.txt

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Right-click and Run as Administrator GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
.

In your next reply let me know if you had any problems with running the tools and post both of the logs created by DDS and the log created by GMER. :)
Hi Jeff, I have just tried to run all 5 of the 1st programs.. alas they will not open, right clicking and running as admin brings up the "user acc window" asking to let this program make changes, I click Yes and nothing happins. This was the case for Any program I have tried. I tried to take a screen shot but alas I cant open any office program either. I also cannot access avast to turn off either I am using the family Desktop to read this and download and transferring by USB stick, making sure I run MBAM on the stick before opening. The laptop is disconnected from the www also as Im aware of key loggers etc… So I await the next step… Cheers
Hi TOMT,

Please try to run the same tools that I had you download but try to run them in Safe Mode.

Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
———-

Once in Safe Mode, attempt to run the tools again. Let me know how that works for you. :)
Hey Jeff, Well mate that was a no goer as well. None of the programs you asked me to try would open. If this means that I have to reinstall the Op system that is not an issue as i will just need to get my latest work off the Laptop. all files etc are working, just any program to do with www or tools… What program is best for checking the external hard drive that I use? I,m using MBam at moment?? Well what can I try next mate? Cheers Tomt
Hi TOMT,

I am not giving in yet. LOL!! Lets try something else.

  • Use this link here to download a fresh copy of DDS.
  • Save this to a thumb drive but name it svchost.exe.
  • Once you get that downloaded transfer it to the infected computer and save it on your Desktop.
  • Now boot into Safe Mode and attempt to run it.

See how that works. If it produces logs, please post those into your next reply. :)
Hi Jeff, that didn't work either mate… what do you want to try next?? Right click to run as Admin doesn't work on anything. I think whatever this bug is has fried my system :o I have had virus's before but this has taken the No1 spot…
Hi TOMT,

I have had virus's before but this has taken the No1 spot…

———-

I would like for you…from a non-infected machine…download onto a thumbdrive ComboFix from one of the following two links
Link 1
Link 2

Transfer that file to the Desktop on the infected computer.
While in Normal Mode please do the following:

Run ComboFix using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > in Start Search type Run > when it populates above select Run - then copy/paste the following bolded text into the run box & click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
 Hey Jeff, update from my last post… last night I was just trying a few things in safe mode, tried a system restore in safe mode. I went back a full month to a restore point that was safe. This has worked and the system is working fine now? did a full MBam with 0 infections? did a full Avast 0 infections. I still don't trust it tho lol,. Connects to www, opens any program etc… full update of all programs etc, still running fine…. I instantly disconnect from www tho! as I dont trust the machine… But I think it should be checked tho, so what should I run to confirm that all is well? I didn't run combofix or any others, Not using the machine for www or work etc and wont until I hear from you. Cheers
Hi TOMT,

tried a system restore in safe mode

Ok that was another option we had but I just did not want to go there quite yet. I am happy that your system is running better though. :D

what should I run to confirm that all is well

Go ahead and run DDS using one of the links here >> Link 1 or Link 2. There will be two logs that are produced that I will need to look at.

In your next reply please post both of the logs created by DDS and the log created by GMER. We will take a look and make sure nothing is hiding. :)
Hi Jeff. DDs ran ok but I had issues with gmer. I have included a screenshot of gmer open, as you can see the right hand pane has most unchecked, I tried to check the boxes but it would not allow me to. SO I ran it as is. I had had to attach this image? ( cant we upload images straight to posts now?) Here is the DDS logs and gmer log
The Lappy seems to be running OK and boots up fine. but until you can confirm it no www for it and work I can do on this desktop for now.
.Cheers Tomt

Hi TOMT,

I had issues with gmer.

Don't worry about that. I did not realize this was a 64bit system. I will look over your DDS logs and get back to you as quickly as I can.
Hi TOMT,

The DDS log looks good. There should have been another log created named Attach.txt created as well. Could you please post that?

Please do the following:

I noticed that you ran Malwarebytes earlier. Please Update it and then run a Quick Scan. Please post the log created into your next reply.
———-

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan

Note: It is recommended to disable on-board anti-virus program and anti-spyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your anti-virus along with your anti-spyware programs.

As a Vista/Win7 user you will need to right click your browser icon and select "Run as Administrator" in order to run this scan.
  • Do not use this instance of your browser for anything besides doing this scan
  • When the scan is complete and the results saved, close that instance of your browser
  • Open a new one the usual way and post the results in this topic.

  • Right-click and Run as Administartor on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push [external image: Posted Image], and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as
ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Back button.
  • Push Finish

In your next reply please post the logs created by Malwarebytes and ESET Online Scanner. :)
Hi Jeff, I have run as said. Mbam log is all clear. Ran Eset online and came back with 0 threats so this did not create a log? DDS: I couldnt find the other log named Attach.txt. Seems to be running ok, But will not confirm untill you give me the Ok, rather blast some more scanners etc at this lappy to be sure… but all scans are 0 infections. what else can I use to be really sure? just that I use online banking etc and want to be safe.. So any others I can try? Hi TOMT,

That is good that both Malwarebytes and ESET came back clean. I notice some outdated software we need to get up-to-date.

I notice that you are running Windows Vista Service Pack 1. The most recent is Vista Service Pack 2. Please go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update. If there are updates available please go ahead and install them. Once that is complete be sure to select Check for Updates and then download and install any more updates that are available. This may take some time so please be patient.

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 9.0 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.
———-

Once you get that complete please run DDS once more and post both of the logs that are created into your next reply. :)
