BlackPegasus says,

Tell them you were being helped in the malware fourms and the computer is clean. Let them know whats going on with your mouse, I'm sure they can help you, add this link into your post.

My mouse is going crazy. When moving between windows, web pages, link fields, etc; it stutters and jumps around.

Not every time but most of the time. Sometimes it freezes until the computer dings and then it resets.
Sometimes it shuts down, I have to unplug and replug it to get it to work.

I have tried 3 different mice.

Thought it was a key logger or such but BlackPegasus has checked my system and says it is clean. ( See above Quote)

Any USB hardware experts here?

I work out of town so it will sometimes be a few days between answers.

Thanks
jringo
Hi jringo, Your mouse to computer connection may be loose. You mouse pad may be the problem. Things to try- 1) Disable pointer trails Open the Mouse item in Control Panel in Microsoft Windows XP, Click Start, click Run, type main.cpl, and then click OK. On the Motion tab or on the Pointer Options tab, click to clear the Show pointer trails check box or the Display pointer trails check box. Click OK. 2) Change pointer scheme to Windows Standard or Default To open the Mouse item in Control Panel in Windows XP, Click Start, click Run, type main.cpl, and then click OK. On the Pointers tab, in the Scheme box, click Windows Standard or click Windows Default. Click OK. 3) Set Hardware Acceleration to Most Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties. On the Settings tab, click Advanced. On the Troubleshooting tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider two notches to the left of Full. The details for this setting explain all pointer and advanced drawing accelerations are disabled. Click Apply, and then click OK. Close the Display Properties window. Cheers, Lee

Hiya Jringo,

The advice Lee gave you was a very good place to start to insure you have no control problems with the settings, if all he asked you to do did not work, I have a few questions to ask.

1. Here you said I have tried 3 different mice, were these used mice or were they new ones?
2. Are you plugging these into the same usb port? or Have you tried a different usb port?
3. If you tried the above, have you or does your machine has a PS Port and try using a ps mouse to see how it works.
4. This may be a wild shot in the dark, it could be possible that the usb files may be corrupted and causing problems.

Please report back with the info posted here to see where to go next.

1. Here you said I have tried 3 different mice, were these used mice or were they new ones? 1 fairly new, 1 new and one wireless that works well everywhere else. 2. Are you plugging these into the same usb port? or Have you tried a different usb port? I have tried different ones 3. If you tried the above, have you or does your machine has a PS Port and try using a ps mouse to see how it works. no PS Port 4. This may be a wild shot in the dark, it could be possible that the usb files may be corrupted and causing problems. How do I check this? I will be out of town until Friday night. Please keep this post open.

How do I check this?

Go to Start / right-click My computer / Manage / Device Manager / expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers" / right-click on the 1st. item on the list / properties / Driver tab / if it says Microsoft driver click uninstall. This may or may not be the mouse driver, if it is you will no longer be able to move the mouse pointer. Reboot with PC restart button.

Your operating system will now reinstall the driver and you may see a "found new hardware" pop-up. If this fixes the problem your done. If not, return to "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Leave the one that disabled your mouse and uninstall all that say "Microsoft" as the driver. Re-boot.

Hopefully, refreshing those drivers may fix the problem.

Cheers,
Lee
Also, try booting to Safe Mode, Does the problem occur there? If not then some program or driver is causing the problem. Post results and we can look at possible solutions.
If the problem does happen in safe mode then try removing all USB devices from Device Manager. See here:

USB DEVICES - How to delete all (resolves some USB problems), Windows Made Easy

Where it says "DO NOT uninstall your mouse if you are using a USB mouse" ignore that. Do the mouse last after all other USB devices have been uninstalled.

To reboot your computer without a mouse, press the Windows key (next to the Start button, then U then R, in sequence). You don't have to close Device Manager before rebooting.

No help

BTW, I run win 7
This is an odd one…. I take it you have run sfc /scannow from a command prompt with elevated privileges?
1 Did you answer the question that was asked about if the problem occurs when you are in safe mode?

2 If it does then we need to try and identify if its a hardware problem or an operating system problem

3 Download an iso of Linux Puppy, burn it to CD as an image (it must be an image, a copy wont do the job) use ImgBurn to do that.

4 Set your computer to boot from CD as boot priority 1 (in the BIOS), insert the bootable Puppy CD into the CD tray and then save the bios changes to the boot priority and exit the bios,

5 Your computer should boot into Puppy…i follow onscreen directions to select language keyboard and video etc

6 If your Mouse works Ok in Puppy then we have identified that its your Windows installation that is probably at fault and a reload/repair is probably called for so make sure that your back up copy archive of everything that is important to you on the machine is accurate, bang up to date and with an extra copy kept safe offsite on removable media.
7 As you are running 7 you have probably used the Microsoft bach up to make a system image and if this is current you could reimage to this…

8 If the mouse is still erratic in Puppy then try another wired mouse (not a wireless one) try it in each USB port…NOTE you will need to reboot your machine into Puppy each time you change mouse or the USB port…try all combinations if still no joy then in the absence of a serial port mouse or a PS2 mouse you are stumped
Let us know how you go
