HI there

Three days ago, Microsoft Security Essentials detected a "potential threat" while I was online. I asked it to remove the threat, and when scans are completed, nothing shows up. At the same time, "Scotty On Patrol" indicated that a program wanted to run a "one time install" which I refused (about 10 times). Since these episodes, my monitor begins blinking - first slowly, then over time speeds up and tends to blink any time the mouse is moved. I can run the computer in Safe with Network connection and everything is fine but cannot even log in thru normal Windows as the computer won't seem to grab my password. I have also run Malaware bytes and nothing shows up.

You've helped me in the past, and I'm hoping you can work your magic again. Below is a HiJack This log

Many thanks
Lee

Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

HijackThis has largely been replaced by other tools. Since being acquired by TrendMicro, HijackThis has not been regularly updated. Many infections are now able to hide partly, or completely from a HijackThis scan. DDS includes all the scan locations of HijackThis and more.

Download and Run DDS by sUBs

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please Please copy / paste the scan reults.

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt.

Download and Run GMER

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that may have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one - make sure it is UNCHECKED)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Thanks for "taking up the cause". I've hit my first snag…I disabled the real time virus protection in MS Security Essentials and shut off Scotty on Patrol, but when I try to run the DDS, it stalls out. I got up to 22 # signs, over about 15 minutes (even though it says it will take 3). That is as far as it goes - neither log shows up. Do you still want me to run the other scans, if the DDS does not cooperate? Lee
I will definitely need to see a DDS log before we can formulate a plan to remove the malware.

Please try the following:

Download and Run RKill

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (Thanks to Grinler of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them.
Rkill.exe
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically try to stop any processes associated with rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next steps.

If you get a message rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. The message is just a fake warning by some rogue programs when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. The trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this should allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate the rogue processes. Continue to try running Rkill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the next steps.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

After running RKill then try the DDS log. If it still won't run please do the following:

Boot your computer in Safe Mode
  • Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded, start tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu option.
  • Press Enter.
  • The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Log into your usual account
  • Run DDS as per previous instructions.
  • When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

If you are still having trouble please let me know.
Okay…I ran the rkill (took more than 20 minutes), then the DDS again - it also took more than 20 minutes to complete. The DDS notepad is pasted below and the other two are attached. Hope this helps! I know it was painfully long, but I'm glad you got those logs to run. We are going to use Combofix now. Normally, it takes from 10-30 minutes to run. Given what we've seen on your machine already, it may take longer. When you run it, please DO NOT do anything else on the machine. Even mouse clicking can stall the program. It may or may not reboot your machine as a part of it's processes. Please try to run it as the directions are written, ideally we don't want to have to use RKill or boot into safe mode to run this. If you encounter problems with it running please let me know so we can decide if RKill or safe mode might be needed.

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
I'm glad to hear Combofix ran without issue.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:60586

FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.type - 0

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe. ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Also, can you please tell me how the machine is behaving now? Are you still having the monitor issues?
So…things are not too good. I am in Safe Mode with Networking at the moment. When the machine rebooted, things started off okay, then the screen just went black. I had to do a hard shut down and was able to restart in Safe Mode. A message then appeared that said Windows had recovered from a serious error. I tried to copy this message into a txt file but it will not copy. It seems to affect two files under Local Settings: \TempWERa999.dir00\Mini091711-01.dmp and Temp\WERa999.dir00\sysdata.xml. WinPatrol has just come on the screen to tell me that a new auto Startup Program has been detected - %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k and has asked me to "press Yes, if this is expected and acceptable. I have not done so yet. As I am in Safe Mode, I have not completed the ComboFix instructions you sent earlier. Suggestions?
I believe that message from Winpatrol is linked with the serious error message from Windows. I'd just close out the message - it's shouldn't be a big deal. You can go ahead and try to do the Combofix script in Safe mode with Networking. After it has run, please try rebooting the machine and tell me how things seem to be running.
HI there Sadly, there was no joy. I re-booted and it didn't make it to the password screen. It did flash a couple of times, then went completely black. Had to do a hard shut down and again and reboot in Safe with Networking. I am attaching the Combo Fix Log that was generated. Lee
It could be malware causing the issue, but it could just as easily be a conflict on the system. It's very hard to tell at this point. I'd like to go ahead and keep moving forward, even if it's in safe mode with networking.

I see you have Malwarebytes already on your machine. Please run it by double clicking the icon on the desktop.
  • Click on the tab labeled Update and then click on the button Check for updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

This scan make take awhile depending on how many items are on the computer. You may want to run it at a time you won't be needing the machine. It should be run from IE and I'd recommend not doing anything else while it's running.
