My computer has been infected for a long time, and now it's overwhelming. I have browser redirects to nasty sites/ad services, slow processor, pop up messages, it won't let me log off, it disconnects my internet, etc. I am using another computer as the infected one will not allow me to use your site without disconnecting me.

Hello and Welcome to WhatTheTech Forums

My name is BlackPegasus.

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for
    further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to
    get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out
the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 3 days your thread will be closed.
  • Please be aware that I am still in training, and all of my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to
ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
  • This may cause a delay in response time, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
  • I will reply back shortly with instructions.

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Please download ComboFix from one of the following links.

    Link 1.

    Link 2.

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**
  • Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
[external image: Posted Image]
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

======================
Please include in your next reply:
1. Any problem executing the instructions?
2. tdsskiller log
3. Combofix log
4. How is the computer behaving?
The TDSSKiller scan did not produce a log, but it seemed to have removed the rootkit it found because the second time I ran the scan it detected nothing.

I'm still having issues with the qttask, and I can't log off without a "Hello4" message always stopping me. I removed McAfee entirely for now as it still wouldn't disable its scans and it wasn't really helping anyway.
Hi AgentFrog,

You need to install a Antivirus program on your system. As a rule of thumb one should run one firewall, one antivirus program in memory, and one antispyware utility in memory. It's fine to have other security tools available on an as-needed or on-demand basis, but when multiple tools simultaneously perform the same function, you're asking for trouble.

I would recommend that you install one of these free Antivirus programs immediately before we begin cleaning your system. Just choose one:
Microsoft Security Essentials
Avira
Avast

NEXT

I need you to uninstall QuickTime

Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs. On the list you should find an entry for QuickTime. Click Remove and allow Windows to completely remove each one in turn. Then reboot your computer to complete this part of the process and then you can reinstall it as it seems to be infected.

ComboFix - CFScript

This script is for this user and computer ONLY! Using this tool incorrectly could cause problems with your operating system… preventing it from ever starting again!
You will not have Internet access when you execute ComboFix. All open windows will need to be closed!

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

RenV::
c:\program files\ANI\ANIWZCS2 Service\WZCSLDR2 .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DW\dwtrig20 .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched .exe
c:\program files\D-Link\AirPlus G\AirGCFG .exe
c:\windows\SMINST\RECGUARD .exe

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

======================
NEXT

Please run aswMBR again
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.
====================
Please include in your next reply:
1. Any problem executing the instructions?
2. Combofix log
3. aswMBR log
4. How is the computer behaving?
I was actually able to turn off the computer now without the "hello4" pop up stopping me! I still can't connect to the internet though even though my broadband is working. I don't know if this effected or not but awhile back my brother did a DNS cache flush to try and stop the browser re-directs.

Oh yeah and the scan still detects some issues.

Hi AgentFrog,

Lets try the fixes below and see which one will get your Internet working again. Please note which one worked and let me know.

Please do the following:

if your network icon appears on the Windows taskbar, then you can repair it by right-clicking on the icon and selecting Repair.

[external image: Posted Image]

If you have no task bar icon do this:

  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click on the Settings menu option.
  • Click on the Control Panel option.
  • When the Control Panel opens, double-click on the Network Connections icon. If your Control Panel is set to Category View, then double-click on Network and Internet Connections and then click on Network Connections at the bottom.
  • You will now see a list of available network connections. Locate the connection for your Wireless or Lan adapter and right-click on it.
  • click on the Repair menu option.

[external image: Posted Image]

Let the repair process perform its tasks and when it has finished, your Internet connection should be working again.

if no luck - try this:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
  • Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection for cable and DSL or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and choose Properties.
  • Click the Networking tab
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
  • Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back.
  • Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically".
  • Click OK twice to get out of the properties screen and restart your computer.
  • If not prompted to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

In I.E.
  • Check internet options settings.
  • Tools > Internet Options > Connections
  • LAN settings
  • Choose "automatically detect settings"
  • uncheck both proxy settings boxes

In FireFox
  • Click on Advanced -> Network -> Settings…
  • the No Proxy option should be selected

Next: - try this:

Go to Start > Run > type in CMD to open a command prompt.

Type in the following command in the command prompt and press Enter.

netsh int ip reset reset.log

Then also type the following command and hit enter.

netsh winsock reset catalog

Once that completes then restart the system and see then if you are able to get online.

next this -

Go to Start > Run then type: CMD into the run box

You will now see a black DOS-like screen.

Type the following at the command prompt:

IPconfig /release. (Note the space between the "g" and the slash / it needs to be there)

Hit enter Then type:

IPconfig /Renew (Note the space between the "g" and the slash / it needs to be there)

Hit enter
I got my connection working again by disabling Zonealarm and then restarting and permanently allowing Firefox. Should I now proceed with the previously mentioned instructions?
The scan for C:\WINDOWS\system32\sti_cis.dll didn't run because it said the file was empty, so I tried scanning scanning sti_ci.dll and the results were no malware found for all scanners on jotti.org. Kapersky scanner isn't working atm and virus total link doesn't work.
