I have a Dell Latitude D610 laptop which has the Windows XP OS and an 80 GB hard drive. 17 GB are used, 54 GB are free. I recently downloaded Bearshare to access MP2 files and since then the computer isn't acting properly. I have Avast anti virus which is currently disabled and I cannot fix/start it. if I open Firefox or Internet Explorer the Bearshare screen comes up in stead. I've tried System Restore twice but this hasn't fixed any of these problems. I downloaded Hijack This on the laptop, ran it and saved the log file, which I am now sending from a different computer.
any help is much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Can you access the internet with he infected computer?

Avast appears to be running. Is the icon present near the clock?

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan
[external image: Posted Image]

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
[external image: Posted Image]

There shall also be a file on your desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) folder. Please attach that zipped file in your next reply.

Next

Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the box beside Scan all users
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

No need for a Hijackthis log this time.

Please post back with
  • aswMBR.txt
  • MBR.dat (attached)
  • both OTL logs
Thanks
Hi oldman 960,

I hope I didn't just hit the wrong button, so I'll start over.

word wrap is unchecked in notepad

Yes, I can access the internet

Avast is now running as Secure. a couple of days ago it wasn't and I couldn't re-start it.

I also intiially tried to uninstall bearshare but I'm not sure that worked. I have not tried to uninstall anything since.

here is the aswMBR.txt file:

next time I'll be more careful about what I download. I usually am but this time I fell to impulse and paid the price. lesson learned……… Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated.

bye for now……..

Hi oldman960, I'm back because I spoke too soon. I tested opening Firefox and it looked normal but if I enter a topic in the search field I'm back to bearshare, so it didn't go away after all. very frustrating, to say the least. now what I should I do. thanks in advance. dreux
Hi dreux,

This folder, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\29290, contains a shockwave file. Do you know what it is?

For the search engine try this:

At the left end of your search field there should be a small box with an arrow in it. Click the arrow and you should get a drop down menu with a list of search engines. At the bottom of the list click Manage search engines.

Click on BearShare and click the remove button.

You can also use the move up or move down buttons to place the search engine of your choice at the top of the list.

How did you make out?

Thanks
Hi oldman960, as far as the folder with the shockwave file, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\29290, I could not find it using Windows Explorer but I did find it using the Search feature. the file folder 29290 is associated with a registry value of {D87A7EC9-465B-4ACB-88C1-A93A9B154668}, but using the find feature in regedit found nothing, so I'm assuming it is hidden. The arrow you're talking about in the search field is only in Firefox, not Internet Explorer, which I rarely use. the BearShare is not listed on that drop down menu, so I can't remove it. what happens is that when I open the Firefox screen everything looks fine. once I enter something in the search field in the center of the screen and then hit enter the BearShare screen pops up with its search results. the Firefox icon at the top left of the screen changes to the BearShare icon when this happens. when I open Internet Explorer there are no BearShare issues, only in Firefox. that tells me that I just need to clean up Firefox, correct? thanks for your help
Hi dreux,

Try this. Open firefox. In the address bar (not the search field) type about:config and hit enter. When the window opens click "I promise to be careful"

Scroll down to keyword.URL, right click on it and click reset

Close Firefox and reopen it. Still ending up at Bearshare when you search?
Hi oldman960, I tried your config suggestion but it didn't work since the reset option in the modify menu is not highlighted. this is only available when the particular line is bold, and that line is not. however, there is another search field in firefox which is to the right of the address bar. if I enter a value there and hit enter I get a regular search from firefox. the bearshare screen only shows up if I use the search field in the middle of the firefox screen and then hit enter. so somehow it's only tied to that aspect of firefox. thanks dreux
Hi dreux,

Try this.

Right click on keyword.URL, click modify.

In the enter string value box copy and paste the following line and click oK

http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=

Is it working now?
Hi dreux,

about:config
