Achamian As it has been a few days since I last heard from you, I was wondering if we were still battling on or have decided to call it a day. Thanks
Hi, very sorry for the delay, we haven't abandoned you, Achamian is indisposed, so I will assist if I can until his return. Would you please recap the situation as it stands right now. Are you able to boot to normal mode are you able to boot to safe mode are you able to run any programs from USB either in safe mode or normal mode Is your USB now recognized what programs have you been able to save to your machine Do they function Have you tried a "repair install"
CatByte Thank you for your reply and offer to assist. I hope all is OK with Achamian as he has been most helpful til now. In answer to your queries and to bring you up to speed with the situation, I reply as follows: Are you able to boot to normal mode? YES. However, it takes 31 minutes (I timed it twice) to arrive at the desktop screen with icons on it. Also two boxes appear: (1) Warning - Please reinstall/update the display driver and program. [OK] (2) Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: …ommon Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray9.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. [OK] Are you able to boot to safe mode? YES. As above it takes a long time to arrive at the desktop screen with icons. Are you able to run any programs from USB either in safe mode or normal mode? YES both. I can run programs from USB and CD, however, cut & paste, save as, dragging from window to window is not working. I cannot copy anything to C: drive or desktop. Neither from USB or CD. Is your USB now recognized? When I restart infected pc with USB it is recognised. If I insert it after it does not appear on 'My Computer' although it is lit up, but I haved saved files to it (eg reports). However, when we used XPUD and went to mnt usb was not listed. What programs have you been able to save to your machine? Do they function As stated above, saving to my c: drive or desktop has proved impossible so far. Have you tried a "repair install"? Not sure about this one. I have used XPUD and PE Builder and know I have renamed/replaced some files. I also used the Avira Antivir Rescue System and have created a new XP disc with SP3 as the original I have is with SP2 which we used to take some files. I know Achamian was trying stuff to allow to copy & paste from usb. Also recently (and probably because of my pleading) he was trying to get the pc to start up faster. I hope this update helps. Once again, thanks for your assistance. Pete
OK

Let's give a few things a try then, you may have tried before, but let's give it another go

Please look in Device manager and see if there are any warning triangles, try and troubleshoot or re-install if there are

Press the WinKey + R to open a run box > type devmgmt.msc into the open run box > press OK > Device Manager will open.

Please download a fresh copy of ComboFix to your USB > rename it to Svchost.exe before saving it

Link 1

Now boot your computer to safe mode

Press the WinKey + R to open a run box > type the following command into the runbox to start ComboFix

F:\Svchost.exe (replace F:\ with the drive letter matching your USB)

ComboFix should begin to scan, it wont be able to install the recovery console as you are not connected, so just OK your way through until it begins to scan

allow it to scan uninterrupted, give it three times as much time to scan than you think it should take, even if it appears to have completely stalled.

If it completes, then save the log to the USB and post it.

If there are any error messages please let me know exactly what they are.

Also what have you tried in order to re-establish your connection?
CatByte

Thanks for your instructions.

Got to the Device Manager box, however, it was completely blank. Absolutely nothing. Tried to access it twice. Same results.

Rebooted computer in safe mode. Ran F:\Svchost.exe (new copy, as we tried this before).

It seemed to be working fine. A blue box appeared with message “ Please wait. ComboFix is preparing to run”. Then “Scanning for infected files….”
Then all of a sudden a box appeared:

Rootkit !!
ComboFix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine
[OK]

Rebooted in Safe Mode and tried again.

[Note: File Svchost.exe changed on its own to ComboFix on usb, so I renamed it again as Svchost.exe before rebooting]

Same as above but no “Rootkit” box and scan started this time.

AutoScan:
Completed Stage_1, Completed Stage_2, etc up to Stage_50. Then deleted some files and stated to let it reboot Windows by itself.

It did take quite a while on “saving your settings”

Eventually, it rebooted and produced the ComboFix report which is copied below.

Thanks for your help on this. I know we tried ComboFix before but we never managed to get a scan / report.

Internet browsers: Have made various attempts, however, never successful. There is no connection. Mozilla Firefox states Server not found. While Internet Explorer does not even start (it just flashes and disappears). Plugging same cable into laptop and internet connection is immediate.

Previously, Achamian instructed me to copy clean replacement files from the root directory. I believe this was to help restore internet connection. Results as follows:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\
wuauclt.exe (new clean file added)
wuauclt1.exe (file there)
wuauclt.exe.old.exe (previously renamed file)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\

cdrom.sys (new clean file added)
cdrom.sys.old.sys (previously renamed file)

ipsec.sys (new clean file added)
ipsec.xxx (recently renamed file)

No apparent difference re Internet browser as a result.

Thank you.

HI

Please do the following:

Navigate to the following file > right clicjk and delete it
c:\windows\system32\c_52283.nl_.vir

Now open up services:

Go to Start > Run > type services.msc into the open run box

set your services to start automatically

In I.E.
  • Check internet options settings.
  • Tools > Internet Options > Connections
  • LAN settings
  • Choose "automatically detect settings"
  • uncheck both proxy settings boxes

In FireFox
  • Click on Advanced -> Network -> Settings…
  • the No Proxy option should be selected

if your network icon appears on the Windows taskbar, then you can repair it by right-clicking on the icon and selecting Repair.

[external image: Posted Image]

If you have no task bar icon do this:

  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click on the Settings menu option.
  • Click on the Control Panel option.
  • When the Control Panel opens, double-click on the Network Connections icon. If your Control Panel is set to Category View, then double-click on Network and Internet Connections and then click on Network Connections at the bottom.
  • You will now see a list of available network connections. Locate the connection for your Wireless or Lan adapter and right-click on it.
  • click on the Repair menu option.

[external image: Posted Image]

Let the repair process perform its tasks and when it has finished, your Internet connection should be working again.

if no luck - try this:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
  • Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection for cable and DSL or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and choose Properties.
  • Click the Networking tab
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
  • Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back.
  • Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically".
  • Click OK twice to get out of the properties screen and restart your computer.
  • If not prompted to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

Next: - try this:

Go to Start > Run > type in CMD to open a command prompt.

Type in the following command in the command prompt and press Enter.

netsh int ip reset reset.log

Then also type the following command and hit enter.

netsh winsock reset catalog

Once that completes then restart the system and see then if you are able to get online.

next this -

Go to Start > Run then type: CMD into the run box

You will now see a black DOS-like screen.

Type the following at the command prompt:

IPconfig /release. (Note the space between the "g" and the slash / it needs to be there)

Hit enter Then type:

IPconfig /Renew (Note the space between the "g" and the slash / it needs to be there)

Hit enter

If none of that makes any difference at all and you still can't connect

try this again:

  • Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then click OK.
  • At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.
Note This command may take several minutes to finish. You may be prompted to provide Windows installation source files when you run the sfc /scannow command.
  • At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to close the command prompt.

Hi

I just had a thought about something,

I think you now have corrupted permissions (one reason why device manager wont populate)

please give this a try

  • Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
  • type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

  • You should receive a "Task is completed" message and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message.
(For more information about this message, see the %windir%\Security\Logs\Scesrv.log file.)
CatByte Thanks for latest set of instuctions. 1. Deleted: c:\windows\system32\c_52283.nl_.vir OK 2. Typed services.msc into the open run box but received following box: Services Unable to open service control manager database on . Error 1307: This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object. [OK] Clicking [OK] you get another “Services” window which is completely blank 3. Internet Browsers Internet Explorer: Instructions you gave were already in place. Nothing changed. FireFox: Have 3 buttons on to General, Shortcut, Compatibilty. Had a look under each did not find any ‘Proxy’ option. None ticked. Nothing changed. 4. Network icon does not appear on the Windows task bar. Went to Control Panel. Opened Network Connections but it was totally blank. Folder is completely empty. Tried Network Identification under Advance menu but after a while of ‘waiting icon’ nothing happens. There is no default connections and attempts to establish one were not successful. 5. In view of the above did not try the rest of your instructions although I can if you advise so. Thanks Pete
OK

services.exe is infected and your permissions to the file has been locked out

we need to find a replacement for services.exe

This is where it is normally located C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe

Have a look for another one in the following locations:

C:\Windows\erdnt\cache
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
C:\Windows\system32\dllcache

if you find a replacement at any of these locations > navigate to the file located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe > right click it and rename it services.exe.vir

now see if you can return to the replacement file located and move it into the system32 folder

If you are unable to do that > rename services.exe to services.exe.vir > wait five seconds > press F5 and WFP should create a new services.exe for you, however, this new one may also be infected with the same locked down permissions

If so, then change the permissions manually on that file:

please do the following:

Reboot into safe mode and log into an account that has Administrator rights (the security tab will only appear in safe mode)

To take ownership of that file, follow these steps:
  • Right-click on services.exe and then click Properties.
  • Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
  • Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
  • In the Name list, click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK.

The administrator or the administrators group now owns the file.

Now to change the permissions on this file that you now own, follow these steps:
  • Click Add.
  • In the Enter the object names to select (examples) list, type the user or group account that you want to have access to the file.
For example, type Administrator or your user name..
  • Click OK.
  • In the Group or user names list, click the account that you want,
  • select the check boxes of the permissions that you want to assign that user. (grant all the permissions that are available)
  • When you are finished assigning permissions, click OK.

You should now be able to access the file.

Let me know how that goes and if it has made any difference to your functionality.
Hi

Just found out from one of our genuis tool developers that there is a little tool that will automatically grant the permissions on any file that is locked down that will run from USB (credit to farbar)

Please run the following:
  • please download GrantPerms.zip and save it to the desktop of your clean computer.
  • Unzip the file and place GrantPerms.exe onto your USB
  • now restart the infected computer with the USB inserted
  • open a run box (WinKey +R) Type in the following command

e:\GrantPerms.exe (replace e:\ with the drive letter of your USB drive)

    Grant Perms will now open:

  • Type the following in the edit box of Grant Perms:

c:\windows\system32\services.exe

  • Now Click Unlock.
  • When it is done click "OK".
  • Now click List Permissions and post the result (Perms.txt) that pops up.
  • A copy of Perms.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Please reboot your computer,

Let me know if there is any difference
CatByte Absolutely amazing! I cannot thank you enough for your last instruction. I used the GrantPerms as instructed and it worked miracles. The text is posted below. After using GrantPerms, the infected pc starts normally (no more half hour waits) and wonder of wonders the internet connection also works. All I did was click on FireFox and it connected to the internet immediately as it did before. In fact, I'm sending this post from the infected pc. I was also able to copy & paste the 'Perms' text from my usb to this post. As you may recall the cut & paste, save as, etc was proving impossible to use. Also the usual toolbar below with wndows icons is back. I know there are still issues but I am really greatful for your assistance. It has been around a month since we started and while not giving up was getting a little worried. While I await your next set of instructions, I would like to inform you that I am now getting a new box when I start the computer. The title of the box is 'Status'. It is requesting to insert the 'status disk' and even if I try to cancel it does not go away. It runs some windows installer program and then asks for 'status.msi' file. While thanking you once again, I look forward to your next reply. Best Regards Pete GrantPerms by Farbar Ran by [removed] at 2011-10-02 21:57:04 =============================================== \\?\c:\windows\system32\services.exe Owner: BUILTIN\Administrators DACL(P)(AI): BUILTIN\Administrators FULL ALLOW (NI) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM FULL ALLOW (NI) BUILTIN\Users READ/EXECUTE ALLOW (NI)
That is awesome news, good job (farbar is a genius )

Let's run junction to see what else might be locked up

  • Please download Junction.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
  • Now go to Start > Run to open a run box > Copy and paste the following command in the open run box and click OK:

    cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

  • A command window will open and the system will be scanned.
  • Wait until a log file opens.
  • Copy and paste or attach the content of it in your next reply
