Also possible ReDirect Virus.Downloaded McAfee AntiVirus Trial, which didn't help. Ran ComboFix, which helped. Had problems getting rid of McAfee, wireless quit working, ran MCPR.exe. Thank you.

Hi amitemurray, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Combofix is a very powerful tool and should not be used without supervision.

Please post the combofix log, it can be found at C:\Combofix.txt.

Also please post Add-Remove Programs.txt it can be found in C:\Qoobox

Please discribe any symptoms or problems you are having. Is the desktop back, any missing icons?

Thanks
Hi oldman960,
Thanks for helping. Desktop and icons are back. Machine seems to be operating normally. I read on this site that just because a machine seems clean doesn't mean it is.

Hi amitemurray,

There doesn't appear to be an antivirus program installed on this computer. Please limit your internet activity to downloading tools and posting in this topic.

I need some information on some unidentified files. We will use Virustotal Please submit these files for analysis

To submit a file to virustotal, please click on this link

VirusTotal

copy and paste the following into the upload a file box

c:\program files\pikachu.exe

scroll down a bit and click "send file", wait for the results and post them in your next reply.

Please note that sometimes the scans take a few minutes. Please ensure that the scan has completed and the results are complete .

Thanks
Hi oldman960, Pikachu.exe is a Tetris-style game. Regarding, I had previously installed PC Tools AntiVirus Free. Here is the analysis from VirusTotal on c:\program files\pikachu.exe. File already submitted: The file sent has already been analysed by VirusTotal in the past. This is same basic info regarding the sample itself and its last analysis: MD5: a5719ee234d177c2e56765aeebb95625 Date first seen: 2006-06-27 05:54:59 (UTC) Date last seen: 2011-02-21 03:49:29 (UTC) Detection ratio: 5/43 What do you wish to do?
Hi amitemurray,

When VirusTotal asks it wants to know is you want to accept the current analysis or rescan. I think the file is ok.

Let's try to get the rest of McAfee removed as well as some old vunerable java. Once you do that I'll give you some link to good free antvirus programs.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java™ 6 Update 7
McAfee AntiVirus Plus

Do not uninstall Java™ 6 Update 20

Next

Rerun MCPR.exe.

Next

Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, check the box beside Scan all users
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Please post back with
  • both OTL log
Computer still ok?

Thanks
Hi oldman960, I uninstalled the three Java items, but McAfee AntiVirus Plus is not listed in Add or Remove Programs. Am I overlooking it, somehow? I haven't yet rerun MCPR.exe, or run OTL. Computer still seems to be okay. Thanks.

Hi amitemurray,

Ok the Windows Catalogue is normal. It's a link to products made for Windows.

Let's do a couple of scans and see if there is anything left. Are you experiencing any problems with the computer?

You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM

  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Go here to run an online scannner from
ESET

(Note: You can use Internet Explorer or FireFox for this scan. If you use FireFox you will be asked to install an additional component. Please allow this.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. or C:\Program Files\ESET\log.txtWe will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log.

Please post back with
  • MBAM log
  • ESET log
Thanks
Hi oldman960, I was just about to tell you I am not experiencing any problems, when the computer suddenly went to the Blue Screen of Death, and showed this error message: "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT". It went on about a memory dump, and told me to restart. I did, and now I can't load MBAM! I'm getting this message from Malwarebytes: "PROGRAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE(0, 13, CreateSDK). I haven't run ESET yet. Thanks.
