I’m having problems with my PC starting and running very slow. Also, I am getting this - “Internet explorer has encountered an error and needs to close.” Directly followed by this, -”Unspecified error occurred in AVG”.
I scanned with MBAM and it found 4 infections which it cleaned but still didn’t improve PC performance, also eset scan finds nothing.
Please help.

Hello nscalenut and :welcome:

My name is JonTom

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

I scanned with MBAM and it found 4 infections

Please post the MBAM log for me to review (you can find it by opening MBAM and clicking on the "Logs" tab).

Lets take a closer look at your system with the following scans:

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click on the DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    [external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOTKIT" entries

Please post the DDS logs and the GMER log in your next reply. If you encounter any problems with the scans come back and let me know.

Hello nscalenut

Thank you for the logs.

I scanned with MBAM and it found 4 infections which it cleaned

The MBAM log I wanted to review was the one that confirmed the identity of the infected files and showed that they were removed. I would like to see what has been removed from your machine as it may provide us with a clue to where your problems are coming from (It looks as though you have posted a brand new MBAM scan log which is not what we need).

Do you still have that log on your machine? If so please post it in your next reply.
I no longer have that Mbam log. Sorry, I purged all the logs after it found those infections.
Hello nscalenut

I purged all the logs after it found those infections

Okay, no problem. Your latest MBAM log is clean :)

Your logs actually look pretty good to me. There is nothing obviously wrong jumping out from them.

One thing that may be related to the system slowness you describe is machine age.

This machine is running on a Pentium® 4 with 1GB of RAM installed (less than half of which is free).

eset scan finds nothing

Are you experiencing any browser redirects, popups etc?

As you have already ran MBAM, lets try a different tool:

  • SuperAntiSpyware

  • Download SuperAntiSpyware by clicking here and save the file (called superantispyware.exe) to your desktop.
  • Once the download is complete, close all windows and double click on the superantispyware.exe icon to start the installation.
  • Follow any prompts you receive (do not make any changes to the default settings provided).
  • Click on "Finish" to complete the installation.
  • SuperAntiSpyware will automatically open. Select your preferred language and click on "OK".
  • You will now be prompted to update the SuperAntiSpyware definitions. Please press the "Yes" button to allow the program to download and install the latest updates so that it can properly detect and remove the latest malware.
  • Follow the prompts and click on the "Finish" button.
  • The main menu will now appear.
  • Click on the "Scan your computer" button and choose "Complete scan" then click on "Next" to begin the scan.
  • If SuperAntiSpyware detects any Malware, allow the program to quarantine what it finds.
  • To obtain the log of the scan you have just performed, start SuperAntiSpyware, and click on the "Preferences" button.
  • Now click on the "Statistics/Logs" tab and then double click on the log with the most recent time and date.
  • Copy and paste the log into your next reply.

  • For more detailed instructions on running SuperAntiSpyware click here.

Please post the SAS log in your next reply.

Don't get pop-ups but do get ads for viagra and such on web pages that have different advertisers. Those type ads seem to be positioned on top of the real ad.
Hello nscalenut

Thank you for the log.

  • Combofix

  • Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

  • VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here .
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • Notes: Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  • Should there be issues with internet afterward:

In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> Lan Settings -> uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

In Firefox: Tools Menu -> Options… -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection and uncheck the proxyserver, set it to No Proxy.

Please post the the ComboFix log in your next reply :)
Thank you again for helping me JonTom, it is very much appreciated.

I can only temporally disable AVG 2011 for 15 minutes. I read the tutorial but cannot find how to turn it off until I decide turn it back on again. When combofix rebooted, AVG started and I had to turn it (AVG) off again.
Also when combofix rebooted AVG flagged it (combofix) twice. I chose “Leave as is for now” on both occasions. Then I got a window “Internet explorer is not currently your default browser, would you like to make it your default browser?” I chose “Yes”.

Browsing seems to be a bit better, no more ads. I have not had Explorer close today nor have I seen AVG reporting an error. However, it still is not what it was before the infections that MBAM found and cleaned. Start-up is still painfully slow compared to before. CCleaner is showing both Adobe Acrobat 9.0 and 10.0 under the applications tab, also showing AVG Antivirus 9.0 and 10.0 as well. McAfee was also there. McAfee came installed on this machine when brand new (from Dell) but was dumped a year later for Norton internet security suite. I kept Norton for about a year before dumping it for AVG paid versions about five years ago. I found the McAfee folder with an explorer search and sent to recycle bin Quicktime has been turned off via msconfig start-up tab, yet boot takes 3½ minutes. I have a few games on here will it help if they are removed? Also have lots of pictures and mp3 files they can be moved to external hard drive if that will help.
Hello nscalenut

Lets see what the following can tell us:

  • Temporary File Cleaner

    • Download TFC to your desktop.
    • Close any open windows.
    • Double click the TFC icon to run the program.
    • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run.
    • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    • The program should not take long to finish.
    • Once complete it should automatically reboot your machine.
    • If your machine does not reboot automatically, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean.
    • Note: After running TFC your machine may take slightly longer to boot the first time. This is normal.

  • MalwareBytes AntiMalware:

    • I can see that you have MBAM installed.
    • Double click on your MalwareBytes AntiMalware icon to launch the program.
    • Click on the "Update" tab and then on "Check for Updates".
    • The program will now install the latest Malware definition files.
    • Once complete, click on the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform Quick Scan"and then click on "Scan".
    • Once the program has scanned your computer, a log file will be created in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

    • If the scan detects any Malware-related objects, make sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected" <– Very Important.

I note that you ran ESET on your machine before seeking assistance. I would like to see another ESET report just to be safe. If everything looks okay with the scan logs we can then try to address your system speed issues.

  • Please run the following scan

    • Note:Internet Explorer is preferred for this scan, although it will run with other browsers.
    • Note for Vista/Windows 7 Users: ESET is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on your Internet Explorer icon and select "Run as Administrator".
    • Please disable your real time security programs before performing the scan.

    • Scan your system with Eset Online Scanner
    • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use.
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps).
    • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.

    • Check [external image: Posted Image]
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    • Check [external image: Posted Image]
    • Make sure that the option to "Remove Found Threats" is UN checked.
    • Push the "Start" button.
    • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    • When the scan completes, push [external image: Posted Image]
    • Push [external image: Posted Image], and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    • Push the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • Push [external image: Posted Image]

Please post the MBAM and ESET logs in your next reply aslong with a new DDS log.
Tried to run TFC twice. Both times machine would not complete reboot. I had to force shutdown with power button. Windows music, booting and shutdown both are very choppy. Similar to a machine gun.
