Download About:buster from http://downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to your desktop.

Click here for instructions on how to boot into safe mode.

Boot up in safe mode.

Run About:buster, click OK, Start, and OK again to start the scan. Let it scan and fix everything it finds.

Reboot your computer in normal mode.

Put Hijackthis in it's own folder (otherwise it will scatter backups of anything you fix all over your desktop) and post a fresh log.

Hi there! Don't worry, I haven't forgotten you, there's a few things I have to checkup in your log, I'll be back a bit later. :)

Hi there, I'm back now.

First can you put Hijackthis in it's own folder please.

Run Hijackthis, scan and put a check against these items:

N1 - Netscape 4: user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "www.MyJoi.net/MyJoi.htm"); (C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\francmede\prefs.js) <—– Check this if you didn't set it as your Netscape homepage.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [d3ym.exe] C:\WINNT\d3ym.exe

Close all windows apart from Hijackthis and click "Fix Checked". Reboot your computer and delete the file C:\WINNT\d3ym.exe (you may need to show hidden files see here for details)


O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Do you know about these two? Did you set them using startpage guard/spybot? Or if you are you on a network your network adminstrator may have set them?

Apart from that, I'd recommend you update your Acrobat reader to version 6.

Thanks for all your help!!! I deleted the two lines you suggested, rebooted and tried to delete C:\WINNT\d3ym.exe but couldn't. I get the error message "Cannot delete d3ym. Access is denied. The source file may be in use." I ran the hijackthis log again and the lines I deleted earlier were back as if it was never deleted. The log is below. Thanks. Also, my homepage is hijacked back to res://znajt.dll/index.html#27063. Thank you.

Scan with Hijackthis and tick these two:

Reboot into SAFE MODE.

When you've booted to safe mode, bring up Task Manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Delete all together), click the Processes tab at the top, and check if d3ym.exe is there. If it is select it and click end process. If it isn't, good.

Run about:buster again, twice, saving both logs.

Reboot into normal mode and post the about:buster logs and a new log from Hijackthis.

(Please update your copy of Hijackthis to the latest version 1.98.0 before you post a new log)

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.lavasoft.de/res/aaw6.exe

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives

  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details

  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning

    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Scan with Hijackthis and check off these items:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ipak.exe] C:\WINNT\ipak.exe

Closee all other programs and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot into safe mode, and find and delete:

C:\WINNT\system32\javass.dll

C:\WINNT\ipak.exe

Still in safe mode, run about:buster two or three times (or until it doesn't remove any files) and save all it's logs.

Next, start Ad-Aware.

  • Use Custom Scanning Options
[external image: Posted Image] Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

[external image: Posted Image] When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Expertec, I see a significant difference already!!! The Ad-aware in-depth scan came up with nothing found though. Also, I noticed Hijackthis came up with the "R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing" again, even though I selected it for removal as you advised. Please find the new logs below:

Scan with Hijackthis, and check off these items: (The blue ones are optional fixes)

I checked off all the suggested files (including the ones you highlighted in blue) in Hijackthis. I could not delete the ntdv.exe in reboot, but rebooted into Safe mode and got it deleted. Please find below the new log:
