i'm not very confident with my answer because it doesn't add up to 568, jontom's thinking seems logical to me,(except for his actual numbers of 27,12,,14,,18, they don't come to anywhere near 568 ) so it should.(going to work on it and see if i can get numbers that do add up to 568 later)
anyway here's my first quick attempt, i hope you can understand my explaination of how i got it.
75, 120,138,164
the first numbers, 12, 41,62 so 29 between 12 and 41 and 21 between 41 and 62, difference of -8 between 29 and 21 so i think then next difference is 21 +(- 8) which gives us 13, so add 13 to 62 gives me first number of 75.
2nd numbers 18,39,73, diff, 21,34= +13,so 34+(+13) = 47 2nd number is 47+73=120
ect, ect.
ok cannot see any logical/mathematical reason for my numbers that add up to 568.
139,140,144,145.
i see a pattern of sorts..
end 2 numbers of each line always add up to total of previous line, 139+145=284
middle 2 numbers of each line always add up to total of previous line, 140+144=284.
first 2 numbers of each line added follow a descending pattern, -9, -7, and my line -5 of total of previous line, 139+140=179, (284-5)
last 2 numbers of each line added follow an ascending pattern, +9, +7, and my line +5 of total of previous line, 144+145=189, (284+5)
but nothing i can logically/mathematical see to arrive at those specific numbers, lots of number combinations would give a similar pattern.
For example, the sum of the first vertical row is 12 + 41 + 62 + 27.
The sum of the third vertical row is 27 + 32 + 69 + 14.
Add the sum of each vertical row together (142 + 142 + 142 + 142) to get 568.
Anyhooo, it was wrong
This is why Tomk is the master of Monday madness and I am merely small fry
your starting logic tho was that each row = twice the one before:-
12 + 18 + 27 + 14 = 71
41 + 39 + 32 + 30 = 142
62 + 73 + 69 + 80 = 284
therefore
?+?+?+?=568
this i think your right and agree with,
from there on tho i think you missed the boat after all 27+12+14+18 do not equal 568.
yes the vertical columns might now all equal 142 using your numbers and if added together = 568, but still that doesn't follow your original logic of ?+?+?+?=568.
nope..
was working with that premiss anyway but i still can't see a logical/mathematical reason for the numbers..
but will continue to work on it later.
got it..
1st and 2nd number of line taken away from sum of line gives you 1st number of new line.
2nd and 4th number of line taken away from sum of line gives you 2nd number of new line.
1st and 3rd number of line taken away from sum of line gives you 3rd number of new line.
3rd and 4th number of line taken away from sum of line gives you 4th number of new line.
soooooo..
last line 62,73,69,80=284
284-62-73=149
284-73-80=131
284-62-69=153
284-69-80=135
answer 149,131,153,135
149,131,153, and 135 are the correct numbers and your logic works.
However, I think my logic is easier…
First number in each line is sum of 3rd and 4th number in preceding line.
2nd number is sum of first and third number in preceding line
3rd number is sum of 2nd and 4th number in preceding line
4th number is sum of first and 2nd number in preceding line
