Hello,

My daughter owns a Dell Studio 1555 laptop. Around the end of April, she started receiving popups for "XP Total Security". I would appreciate any help you can provide to remove this malware from the laptop. I've attached the required files. Thanks.

Hi Tim

It has taken me some time to look through the logs as there were quite a few. ;)

Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:
  • please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear
  • all logs/reports, etc. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In Notepad click Format, uncheck Word wrap if it is checked
  • if you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
  • the fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
IMPORTANT:

Please DO NOT install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
Please DO NOT run any scans other than those requested

Thanks

Satchfan
Hi Satchfan, A question regarding the OTL logs. Your post stated that the OTL fix log AND a NEW OTL log need to be posted. I assume that I need to run an OTL scan FOLLOWING the reboot to create the New OTL log. If I need to do that, are there any special lines to add to teh Custom Scan/Fixes box? Thanks, Tim
Sorry if the instructions were not clear Tim.

Run the "Fix" as previously posted and that will then produce the "Fix log".

Then:

Run OTL
  • open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)
  • post the OTL.txt log it produces in your next reply with the other one.
Satchfan
Hi Satchfan, Your instructions stated to run OTL (the second time) as a Quick Scan, and "don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time". When I click on the Quick Scan button, those two boxes are checked by default. Once I click Quick Scan, the boxes are checked and the scan begins. I can't UNCHECK those two boxes. How should I proceed? Thanks.

don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time". When I click on the Quick Scan button, those two boxes are checked by default.

Please ignore this as it makes no difference to the infections found in the scan, only to the length of the result that I will have to look at.

Hi Satchfan, I was just reviewing the logs and I think it might be helpful to mentionthat this problem started around the end of April, about 90 days ago. The OTL scan only went back 30 days. Should the OTL scan be re-run and change the aprameter to 90 days? Just a thought…. Thanks.
Hi Tim

I think it might be helpful to mentionthat this problem started around the end of April, about 90 days ago. The OTL scan only went back 30 days. Should the OTL scan be re-run and change the aprameter to 90 days? Just a thought….

Good thought process but the logs should show up the type of infections we are looking for.

=========================================================

We need a closer look at the files in red unless you know what they are, (actually, Fab.exe didn’t show up in the last OTL log so it may not be there):

C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Local Settings\Application Data\230t17d8r0p00q1761g3mnq4h8r4n7k5w62
C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Local Settings\Application Data\fab.exe

Submit a file to VirusTotal

Go to VirusTotal and submit this file for analysis:

C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Local Settings\Application Data\230t17d8r0p00q1761g3mnq4h8r4n7k5w62• click on Browse
• click on the arrow and choose Local Disc (C:)
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)
• below, double-click on Documents and Settings
• double-click on the Application Datafolder
• locate the file 230t17d8r0p00q1761g3mnq4h8r4n7k5w62 click on it and then on Open
• click on Send File.
You will get a report back; post the report into this thread for me to see.

Please repeat the process for:

C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Local Settings\Application Data\fab.exe

=======================================================

Can you also tell me what problems there are now with the computer

Thanks

Satchfan
Hi Satchfan, At first I couldn't locate the Application Data folder. I changed the "View" settings to "Show Hidden folders", and then the Application Data folder displayed. However, I cannot locate EITHER of those files ANYWHERE in the Computer. I can't understand how those files appeared on the scan but I can't locate them. What's the next step? Thanks, :pullhair:
Hi Tim

Apologies; I should have got you to show the “Hidden” files/folders. Don’t worry about not being able to see them – it happens and is not your fault.

==============================================

Download and run ComboFix

Download ComboFix from the following location:

Link

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

    [external image: Posted Image]

    Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    [external image: Posted Image]

    Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
Note: Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a log. Please include the ComboFix.txt in your next reply. It can be found at C:\ComboFix.txt

==============================================

BTW, you didn’t mention the remaining problems. Please let me know in the next post.

Thanks

Satchfan
Hi Satchfan, Not sure if you wanted the CONTENTS of the ComboFix log inserted into the post or attached as a file. I attached it as a file. I will give you another post in a few minutes while I play around with the laptop. What I've seen so far looks good, though. Thanks again for your help.
Hello Satchfan, So far everything looks good. Opened files successfully. Navigated through the internet ok. Email looks good. Thanks.
