Hello
Slimdriver was recommended to me by a friend and it scanned, detected drivers needing installing and did so. All is running better than befoe.
I have gone to the Dell site which recognizes my machine but to my knowledge does not run a scan to see what I currently need. I could be wrong about that because it identified my pc.
I do however, see many recommended and quite a few urgent downloads in every category. I wonder if Dell knows what Slindriver installed?
Should I download the urgent ones at the Dell site or might they be duplications of the ones Slimdriver detected?
Are you having problems? Are there any yellow marks in Device Manager. If not, why are you updating your device drivers?
For device drivers I live by the motto: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
If everything is working then the best you can hope for by updating your device drivers is they will continue to work. The flip side of that is that things will not work as well or you will start seeing strange problems or BSODs.
I have no problems and device manager is fine.
Because everything is running as it should I will leave it alone.
I was tempted into SlimDriver by a friend. I must say my audio and video are improved and everything is running crisply.
I do think, from now on, I will follow the old axiom.
It was suggested to me that I perform system restore on each of the downloads.
I am not going to do it. I could as easily perform an image recovery but nix to that too.
Thanx for the device manager reminder.
I'd be vary wary of driver agents like Slimdriver. I've done a little research into their freeware package (there is also a $30 per year subscription version). AVG flags it as Malware but some other ant-virus software doesn't .
Slimdriver installs an active-X which runs live from startup and is in contact with another program/website that looks for hardware software that often just replaces Microsoft or other hardware drivers already installed with non-approved drivers.
You have to register your full name and email address to use Slimdriver and that is never a good idea.
You have two choices with the Slimdriver downloads. "Ignore" or "download and install". You have no idea of what is being installed This app. runs live and is regularly checking if it has anything compatible it wants you to download and install.
Also be aware that changing drivers can somtimes lead to disastrous results. As Rich said, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I experienced issues like two programs not closing so Windows could not power down. Also Explorer was not working intermittently.
I wrote the SlimDriver forum and I think given time they would/could have helped me.
Their forum was similar to Secunia in that the admins seem to try to help you .
However, I made a mistake with the third party programs and driver update and do not want others reading this thread to think I am well off for it.
I thought it over;system restore, image recovery, wait for the forum and decided to use Acronis. Thankfully it came though. I am updated, current and stable - the pc that is.
Thank you all for you help and the learning experience.
In summary I guess you don't even go to your own site for driver updates unless you have an issue/problem.
