Hi, I'm using a different computer to post this. I haven't had any virus problems and stay pretty vigilant, but my AVG was acting strange today saying I had backdoor trojans so I suspected the Heur,Dropper and downloaded Malwarebytes per instructions here. It found and got rid of 9 things. When I restarted, I keep getting the message "the proxy server is refusing connections" when I try to go online on my laptop (wireless) I appreciate your help!! Jenney
Hi JenneyB, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Try this:

Open your Internet Explorer:
  • At the top click Tools, click Internet Options
  • On the Connections Tab click Lan Settings
  • Uncheck use a proxy server

For FireFox it's
  • Tools > Options
  • Click the Advanced button
  • Click the Network tab
  • In the connections section click the Settings button
  • Check mark No Proxy
  • OK your way out.

Let us know if you can now connect.
Hello and thanks for your help. That did work and I'm able to connect. That Malwarebytes fix was great too–it seems to be completely taken care of. Thanks again.
Hi JenneyB,

We should do a couple of scans to see if anything remains.

Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Right click on OTL.exe and click "Run as Administrator" to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • In the window under Custom Scans/Fixes copy and paste the following

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Right click the aswMBR.exe and click "Runas Administrator" to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan
[external image: Posted Image]

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
[external image: Posted Image]

There shall also be a file on your desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) folder. Please attach that zipped file in your next reply.

Please post back with
  • Both OTL logs
  • aswMBR log
  • mbr.dat (attached)
Thanks
Here are the 2 otl logs – I'll post again with the others

Thanks,
Jenney

Hi JenneyB, How's the computer? Please post the MBAM log from the scan that had the detections. It can be found by opening MBAM and clicking the Logs tab. Click on the log you want and click open. Please post it's contents. Thanks
Hi JenneyB,

and downloaded Malwarebytes per instructions here. It found and got rid of 9 things.

You said you ran MBAM (Malwarebytes) prior to posting here. That is the log I'd like to see. Knowing what MBAM remived will provide clues as to whether it was that malware or something else that changed the proxy settings.

Thanks

Hi JenneyB,

Sorry about the delay, couldn't get on the forum until now.

Given what was in the MBAM log we should look deeper.

In order to run this next tool AVG will need to be uninstalled or the tool will not run. After you have ran the tool you can reinstall it or wait until we are finished. Should you decide to wait please do not access the internet except for downloading tools and posting in this forum.

You can get a new copy of AVG from AVG
You will need the 64bit version.

You could also consider these other free alternative, niether of which will interfer with the tool we are going to use and can be installed after AVG has been uninstalled.
