Hi Astabi,
I'm not a Ham.
(as a kid, I did build a crystal radio (AM band) and listened via head-set late at night in bed when I was supposed to be sleeping)
But my Dad, a US Navy radio operator (USS Nevada - Perl Harbor just before the attack) in WWII and Korea era. was an early enthusiast.
There is no end to the praise deserved by these amateur dedicated communicators who have figured importantly in countless search and rescue and other services to humanity.
Now they are probably mostly hobbyists, but who knows? Maybe after the Mayan Calendar runs out, we'll need their services again.
Hi Doug,
I had my license years ago and let it expire, I just took the test and got a new one!
It's a great hobby, and a lot of fun. I think it's a nice feature that they are not relying on the
internet or phone grid, and are self reliant for communications. But, they can chose to use them if needed or wanted.
My dad was also a radio operator, Vietnam war.
Thanks,
Astabi
Not a "ham" but I always thought it would be interesting to do. I was a radio operator for my infantry platoon when I was a private, but that was when all the encrypted equip was coming out.
