Techs:

Both log files from the OTL scan are below.

This laptop runs slowwwwwww, and has thin red and blue lines running from top to bottom across the screen. It's been a year since checked, so it's due.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

regards,
paultpa

paultpa,

Sorry that it has been so long for you to get a response… but helpers look for topics with zero responses to see who hasn't been helped. You've answered your own topic 4 times… so, it looked like you were already being helped.

Anyhow, the worst thing I'm seeing in your logs are that you are running two antivirus programs. Avira and AVG. Avira hasn't been updated. AVG has been updated, but it is an old version of AVG. I suggest that you uninstall at least one of them. You might want to uninstall both of them and reinstall a current AV program.

Some good free choices are Microsoft security essentials or AVAST!.

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 26
Tomk, Thx for the review and reply. Oooops . . . No problem on the small delay, I had faith someone would step forward soon. Will delete the AVG and update Avira until it expires, then selsct one of the ones you mention. Any next steps? paultpa
paultpa,

Avira is fine. It happens to be what I have on the computer I'm currently typing on. I thought that maybe the reason it is out of date is because you didn't like it. If you're happy with it… keep using it.

Your Java is out of date also.

Let's get an online scan just to make sure there isn't something not showing in the logs so far.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Once you've done all of that, and gotten AVG uninstalled…. please run a new OTL scan and post the log. There will be only one this time. AVG's uninstaller sometimes doesn't do very well cleaning up behind itself… so we may want to do a little sweeping up.
Tomk,

OTL log below the ESET scan . . . it ran and found zero threats, so no logfile to save/post except for this:

========== Alternate Data Streams ==========

paultpa,

I just noticed that I asked you to update Java on two different posts. Sorry about that. The important thing is that you got it updated.

Everything looks good.

Let's cleanup!

  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tomk, Cleaned up and content. Thanks for the keen eye. Two questions: - JavaRE . . . did I need to d/l ALL those files (Linux, Solaris, etc.), or just the ones for Windows? - I have these annoying thin lines on my screen running top to bottom, they look identical to the thin lines you see when you use the defrag that comes with Windows. Any way to remove these, perhaps a better defrag product? Checked out the recommended reading and it's very good material, esp. the gal in Belgium. That made the sacred favorite places list. I'll delete the logs from the scans and also OTL. Many thanks for the good work. best, paultpa

JavaRE . . . did I need to d/l ALL those files (Linux, Solaris, etc.), or just the ones for Windows?

Just this one: jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe

I have these annoying thin lines on my screen running top to bottom, they look identical to the thin lines you see when you use the defrag that comes with Windows. Any way to remove these, perhaps a better defrag product?

Defrag should have nothing to do with lines on your screen. That sounds like a video problem. I suggest that you post over in the hardware forum and see if the Tech Team can get you straightened out.

Good luck and be well.
