Hello WTT helpers,

Seems like I've gotten myself into some trouble again, most likely coming from something I've download off the Net (ugh!) Firstly, sometime today my AVG virus scans started to report a trojan called FakeAV.pov. The only problem is that the infected file is AegisE5.dll, some Internet protocol file for my USB adapter. Without it I am unable to detect any wireless network, and hence, lose my connection to the Internet. Deleting and reinstalling drivers from the Belkin CD doesn't help, my AVG still continues reporting infected files and deleting them.

Secondly, I suspect I've introduced some malware (rootkits, maybe?!?) and other nonsense as I tried to deal with the offending internet program. I am unsure of what lies hidden on my computer now, but my Spybot S&D scans did reveal some stuff which I removed… computer operations doesn't seem hampered except error messages on booting up saying some files are missing. AVG rootkit scanner had some positive reports but I didn't know what to do with them so I left them alone for now.

I've been also getting redirects whenever I search for certain items, such as a redirect when I click on TrendMicro's website from google search links. I've also been unable to post on this forum on my infected computer, when I click on "Post New Topic" I end up with a "Internet explorer cannot display this page" error message. Thankfully I've another computer, so I'm posting it from here…

In short, I think I've stupidly let in a trojan, and other nonsense into my system. :( My HJT log is posted below, thank you guys for helping!

[Edit: Formatted for greater readability - my apologies, didn't check that it was screwed up when I used my other computer to post this. Update: There's definitely something hiding in my system because of the redirects, and I have discovered that I am unable to access my ISP's firewall settings page as well.]
Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

I'm glad you have another computer that you can use to download programs and transfer them to the infected computer. That will make things easier. Until you can access internet on the infected machine, please transfer any tools via USB to the desktop of the infected machine. If you are unsure at any point on how to do this, please let me know.

Run Hijack This
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop to launch Hijack This
  • Click on the Scan button
  • When the scan has finished, please put a check in the box next to the following item:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:49495
  • Make sure all other windows, including your browser are closed, and then click on the Fix Checked button
If you are not prompted to do so, please reboot your computer after the fix has completed.

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Hello patndoris! Thank you for coming on hand to provide me with assistance. I'm not sure how better to describe things so I shall narrate below what I have done and whether anything has happened.

1. Removed the R1 entry from HijackThis per your instructions.

2. Uninstalled AVG as requested from by ComboFix, so I'm pretty much defenceless now heh. Before this, however, and before I actually began any of the steps you recommended, AVG apparently performed one last scheduled scan and removed a whole list (20+) of suspected malware. I do not remember which malware signatures they had, but I noticed multiple instances of the process "conhost.exe" and "csrss.exe" being removed.

3. ComboFix apparently detected rootkit activity on my system.

4. The redirects seem to have disappeared, I was able to access WhatTheTech.com and Trend Micro's home pages from Google search links without any redirects in between. Internet access is a tad patchy though, but I'm not sure if this is related to my current problem…

The entire log is provided below, as requested:

Once again, thanks for your help, am awaiting further instructions.
Well, we still have some issues going on but let's see if we can get the root of the problem solved first, and then we can take care of what is left.

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

Download and Run DDS by sUBs

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please Please copy / paste the scan reults.

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt.

If you have any trouble running these let me know. I'm off to work now but I'll try to keep an eye out for any notifications on this thread.

============= FINISH: 21:19:38.34 ===============

Attach.txt is attached. Question: My Firefox browser doesn't seem to work now because of 'incorrect proxy settings'. Could it be that the malware had changed it to be as such back when I was infected? Else, my computer seems to be working fine and IE is not giving me any major hiccups now.

Attachments:

I was aware of the Firefox issue from the Combofix log, but wanted to get rid of the rootkit first. If you did not do so after running TDSSKiller, please reboot your machine.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Firefox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\user\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles\l7mv0q2m.default\
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 127.0.0.1
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 49495
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.type - 1

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe. ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Please let me know if your Firefox is working ok now.
Latest ComboFix log after applying the script:

My Firefox browser works fine now, too. I can access pages again. :)
Great! I do want to review the log….but it will be a little later today before I can get back to you with our next steps. We do have some double checks to run to ensure we got it all. I'll be back to you as soon as I can.
Alright, got it, my gratitude for your dedication! I shall wait… and in the meantime, install AVAST antivirus software. That should be fine, yes? (On a side note, we must be half a world apart, it's deep in the night where I am. :))
Yes, you can go ahead and install Avast with no worries. Even if we need to use any tools, you would not have to uninstall it. Avast won't cause the conflicts with tools that AVG does. I'm GMT -4 hours (EST). Sounds like you should head to bed now that the worst of the troubles are over. I'll look at the logs when I get home from work and you can just respond when you have time.
OK, let's do a little double checking here and make sure we've got it all. Different tools look in different areas, so we like to run a couple extra scans to be safe.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java SE 6 Update 26
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement then select Accept License Agreement
  • Click on the link to download Windows x86 Offline and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH CheckedApplications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

This scan make take awhile depending on how many items are on the computer. You may want to run it at a time you won't be needing the machine. It should be run from IE and I'd recommend not doing anything else while it's running.

Unless it is absolutely necessary to clear them up? Anyway, apologies on my side for the late response, was busy with school and also down with sinus for the day. Ugh.
Sorry to hear you weren't feeling well, but hey! Your computer is looking good!

The first threats identified are in system restore points. When we do the removal of Combofix it will remove those points so you don't have to worry about them. You can certainly keep any files you want on the F: drive. Just be aware of the potential issus.

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
  • Click Start > Run
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

If there are any remaining tools or logs on your desktop you can right-click and delete them. I would advise keeping Malwarebytes as it is a program you'll want to run regularly.

Great job! Your logs appear to be malware free and you do not appear to be experiencing any malware related problems.
Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer malware free and secure:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Use and Update your AntiVirus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Use only one antivirus and one firewall on your machine
Having more than one anti-virus program and one firewall on your machine, even if only one is running, can cause conflicts and slowdowns in the performance of the machine.

If you need more information on free anti-virus or firewall options please let me know and I will give you some recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
13. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Keep your Java, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Up to Date
Older versions of these programs can contain security vulnerabilities. It is very important to keep them updated.

Update and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software making sure you update definitions each time you scan.

To simplify making sure you have the latest version of many of your security programs and applications, you may want to consider:
Secunia's Personal Software Inspector (PSI). It is a free utility that scans your computer for installed applications and checks to see if they have the latest security patches and updates. If it finds any applications with possible security issues, links and/or instructions are provided for the necessariy updates.

Filehippo's Update Checker. It is free utilitiy that scan your computer for installed software, checks the versions and then sends this information to see if there are any newer releases. Available software updates are displayed and you can decide which ones to download and install. Among many other types of programs, they includes a number of the Anti-Spyware, Firewall/Security and Anti-Virus programs that have been recommended (though not all of them). Note: Definition files should be updated from within the programs themselves. The Update Checker look for newer versions of the software program, not definition files.

Good luck & Happy surfing!
Whew, it's over. Thank you very much for your concern and the help provided! One question though. I forgot to disable Avast while uninstalling ComboFix so a lot of windows came up asking if I wanted to open whatever programs in the Sandbox or normally. I "normal-ed" everything, but am not sure if ComboFix is completely uninstalled. How should I check for this?
