Symptoms like Sasser, minus the disguised process

I've tried everything, it feels like, short of backing up and reformatting my hard-drive. To be honest, I'm in the process of backing up my hard-drive, just in case. Regardless, some information upfront.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows XP. It was first purchased, new, in 2005. For several months beforehand and up until I started experiencing problems, I was protecting my computer with Avira Antivirus and the occasional SpyBot S&D scan.

I started experiencing issues about a week and a half ago, probably around Monday, May 23rd. I received a system message stating that, "Services and Controller App has encountered a problem and must close." followed by the usual "Would you like to send an error report?" Afterwards, I received another system messaging stating that my computer had experienced a harddrive error and must shut down. After restarting my computer, all the programs on my desktop and in my "All Programs" list in my Start Menu were hidden. It also disabled my ability to access Task Manager and to put anything on or affect anything on my desktop.

I let my boyfriend (the techie-er one, haha) take over and try to fix the issues. He unhid the files on my desktop and was able to re-enable my Task Manager. Beyond that, he was unable to do anything to affect the status of my computer. It was not until after this that I discovered that, any time I tried to search for something in a search engine and clicked on a link suggested by the engine, something would hijack the link and redirect me to a generic search engine.

On Wednesday, May 25th, I consulted another friend who suggested I install Malwarebytes and AVG Free. I did so and ran a scan with Malwarebytes, AVG Free (after uninstalling Avira), and SpyBot. Each found a few problems (all of them Malware) and seemed to remove them. I honestly don't remember much about what they found. While the harddrive errors have become less and less frequent, all of the problems have not gone away. When he had the chance, the other friend came over and attempted to fix my issues in person. He tested the extent of the search engine hijack. He made a test user on my computer separate from the Admin user and tried Google on Internet Explorer, only to find he ran into the same issue.

By Friday, May 27th, none of the scans found anything. However, I was experiencing the increasingly more rare harddrive error and the hijacked search engine. Finally, on Tuesday, June 1st, I brought another friend over to let him take a crack at what was going on. He was able to remove another big chunk of malware, but wasn't able to completely fix the problem. He installed Google Chrome and Apple Safari and tried each different browser, only to experience the same issue in each one. No matter the search criteria, the engine, or the browser, the links were hijacked and redirected to another random, generic search engine. Frustrated, he suggested this site in helping me fix my troubles.

One last thing before I post the "Hijack This" log. I didn't notice until tonight, but a phantom Internet Explorer window has been opening up and running in the background. I haven't noticed it until now and probably because I haven't had my volume up. The only reason I noticed it tonight was because I heard random product ads despite not being anywhere on Firefox (my main browser) that would produce those sounds. I had to go into Task Manager to find the iexplorer.exe files that was causing the issue. Anywho, I apologize for the wall of text. I hope this information has helped pinpoint some of the issue that the Hijack This log might not be able to. Otherwise I'd just feel silly.

TL;DR Here's the "Hijack This" log.

P2P - I see you have P2P software, (BitComet), installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infection. If your computer is infected, it almost certainly contributed to your current situation.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are more often than not, infected. The bad guys use P2P file-sharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Please see this topic for more information:

Perils of P2P File Sharing.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it now. You can do so via Control Panel, Programs, and then Programs and Features.

Should you decide to keep it, please don’t use it until we have finished up here.

===================================================

Please disable this program and leave it disabled until we are done.

SPYBOT TEATIMER• Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
• On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
• Uncheck the Resident TeaTimer (Protection of overall system settings) active box.
• Click on the System Startup icon in the List
• Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and click OK at any prompts.
• If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click Allow Change when prompted.
• Exit Spybot S&D.
(When we are finished, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup).

===================================================

Run OTL

  • Double click on the icon to run it.
  • Copy/paste ALL the following text written inside the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    :Services

    :OTL
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No CLSID value found.
    O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - No CLSID value found
    O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - No CLSID value found

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptyflash]
    [purity]

    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)
===================================================

There’s nothing much in those logs so we’ll have to look elsewhere and a bit deeper.

Can you tell me exactly what the situation is with hidden files/folders and Start menu. Although you say your boyfriend restored hidden items and Task Manager, I’m not sure if anything remains hidden or missing.

Thanks

Satchfan
I uninstalled BitComet and followed the instructions for disabling TeaTimer. I ran the OTL on Run Fix with the added stuff and rebooted, but there was no log afterward, so I ran it on Run Scan without enabling LOP and Purity Check, but with nothing extra in the Custom Scans/Fixes and here is the log!~

As for the hidden files thing, I'm fairly certain it was all unhidden. After my boyfriend looked at my computer, my 'All Programs' list on my Start Menu was a little lacking, but the guy who suggested this website to me went into the Start Menu folder and unclicked the "Hidden File" box. I can run the Unhide.exe again if you'd like. I started to the other night, but as it got later, I just ran OTL and aswMBR instead so I could post the logs before bed. Thanks again for the help!
Hi LittleCaydie

I can run the Unhide.exe again if you'd like

That might help to "unhide" the missing entries.

You've done fine with the help you've had and it seems your friends have done a good job so far but I can't help to solve your remaining problems if you don't explain exactly what they are.

Please be specific about what problems remain. Is it all now Internet-related?

Satchfan
Running Unhide.exe as I type. As for the remaining problems I'm experiencing, whenever I look up something in a search engine and click on one of the suggested related links, I get redirected to another site and then to a generic search engine. Afterwards, a phantom iexplorer.exe program starts up in the background and starts playing a random advertisement. For example, let's say I go to Google and search for "Nintendo 3DS." After the search list comes up, I click any one of the links available. My browser starts to direct me to that page, when all of a sudden, it starts to take me to some random website (the ones I've seen in the past have been "washingtonbrewfest.com" or "smartcarsales.com") then redirects me to some generic search engine (list.com and findstuff.com are the most recent ones I'm being taken to) that has my search criteria from Google already typed in and a list of sites suggested for my search as if I'd used the generic search engine instead of Google. At this point, I'll start hearing a random advertisement (I've heard advertisements for Colgate, TruBlood, and automobiles) through my speakers. I'll close the browser (my main browser is Firefox, if that helps any) and the sound will continue to play. If I open up TaskManager, there will be an iexplorer.exe process running that I didn't open and that is taking up 100,000+K Memory Usage. If I stop the process, the ad ceases. When my last friend, Steve, was trying to fix my computer, he tried to look up things in Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Firefox and had the same issues with the hijacking and redirecting I mentioned in the example. Before him, Justin tried to make a separate log-in account to see if the issue was rooted in just my account, but he had the same problem in the test account. Other than that, I haven't experienced any other problems. And, Unhide has gone through and unhidden all my files and everything is back to normal in that respect. =D Does this help/make sense?
LittleCaydie

Thanks for the clear information.

Before resorting to a deeper scan, let’s try resetting the router and removing all temporary files which often contain remnants of infection.

NOTE: Only use the temporary file cleaner if you are sure that ALL files/folders have been unhidden

===================================================

First

Reset the Router

Let’s try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • this can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • if you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up. here
  • you also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • you may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.
Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

Next

Flush the DNS cache
  • Now go to Start > Run > type: cmd
  • Press OK or Hit Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type or copy/paste: ipconfig /flushdns (note the space between “..g /f…” it needs to be there)
  • Hit Enter.
  • You will get a confirmation that the flush was successful.
  • Close the command box.

===================================================

Clear all your temporary files

Download ATF Cleaner
• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe (on your desktop) to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Let me know if the browser problem still persists and if it does, we’ll look deeper.

Satchfan
I reset my router like you suggested and ran ATFCleaner. Unfortunately, the issue still persists. Is there anything else I can do or post that will help?
Hi Little Caydie

Let’s try looking deeper

Uninstall AVG 2011

AVG interferes with some of the tools we use so we need to uninstall it for now. Please don’t use the Internet except to download tools that I request or to reply to these posts until I give the all clear to re-install it.
  • click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs
  • click on AVG 2011, (or any other version listed), and then Uninstall.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Run AVG removal tool

There will still be some remnants of AVG on your computer even after the uninstall so please download and run AVG Removal Tool from here

===================================================

Download and run ComboFix

Download ComboFix from the following location:

Link

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
Note: Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a log. Please include the ComboFix.txt in your next reply. It can be found at C:\ComboFix.txt

I uninstalled AVG 2011, but when I clicked the link you provided for the removal tool, it only took me to a page where I could buy AVG's PCTuner. I tried to look up the AVG Removal Tool, but all the places I found linked me to the same page. Is there something I'm missing? Also, I didn't notice this until now, but despite my 'All Programs' list being populated by all the folders and such that were there before the virus got in, all of the extensions of them are listed as empty. So, when I highlight a folder that has a > at the end, (Empty) shows up where the rest of the files ought to be. Joe (my boyfriend) had me 'Explore' my Start Menu and when we looked in the 'All Programs' folder, it only showed the handful of programs that had, for some reason, not been hidden when the virus started messing with things. I ran UnHide again but it didn't change anything. Any ideas? =/
No. they have changed the link :pullhair: Now that you have uninstalled AVG please try and run ComboFix and if there is a problem we'll get rid of AVG another way. Satchfan
I tried running ComboFix and after clicking "I Accept" at the very first prompt, a window opened on my desktop that looked very similar to my command console, except there was no text in it at all. The task bar "name" for the window was just a single period "." and after the window opened up, my computer froze. I tried it twice more with the same results and each time, I never clicked or moved my mouse (I actually removed my USB mouse completely for the final test, but experienced the same results). Am I doing something wrong? After uninstalling AVG, I had no other firewalls or anti-viruses active, so I'm not sure what might have cause the issue.
Hi LittleCaydie

Try downloading AVG Removal Tool again from here and then try running ComboFix again.

If ComboFix still won’t run, try it in safe mode

To Enter Safemode• Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
• As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY - this will bring up a menu.
• Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
• Then press Enter on your keyboard
