Hello susanaj

Whatever is causing these popups is doing a good job of avoiding detection.

Do the popups appear only when you are connected to the net, or do they also appear when your machine is not connected?

If they appear when you are connect to the net, do you receive them from all of your browsers or just some?

Lets dig a little deeper:

  • aswMBR

    • Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it. (Note: Vista and Windows 7 users Right click the icon and choose "Run as administrator").
    • Click the "Scan" button to start scan.

    [external image: Posted Image]

    • On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Rootkit Unhooker

    • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker and Save it to your desktop.
    • Right click on RKUnhookerLE.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run it.
    • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
    • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest, then Click OK.
    • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
    • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply here.

Note: You may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Please provide the aswMBR log and the Rootkit Unhooker log in your next reply along with the answers to my questions.

Also, I have DSL throught my cable company so my internet connection is always on. The popups only happen when I open IE and go to a website other than my home page which is Google.
Hello susanaj

Thank you for the logs.

I am intrigued by the following file:

C:\users\Susan\AppData\Roaming\NBT\nbt.exe

The executable is listed under installed programs as "NBT".

Do you recognise this program? Is it something you installed?
No I did not install anything called NBT or anything else on that day but I had others in this house who probably did. I deleted that one plus the ones that were games that were downloaded that aren't played anymore.
Hello susanaj

Glad to hear that you are no longer receiving the popups. The file size for your nbt.exe was 552960 and is not listed on the prevx site that you linked to. Having said that, the fact that you are no longer getting the popups after uninstalling it is pretty strong evidence in itself :)

Please update your MBAM and run another scan and then post a new DDS log for me to review. If everything is still running well we will remove our tools.
Everything seems to be running fine now. Malwarebytes found nothing on my latest scan. Hee's the DDS log: . Hello susanaj

Everything seems to be running fine now

Thats good. Your logs appear to be clean :)

Lets remove the tools we used in the steps below:

  • Please Uninstall Combofix

    • Hold down the Windows key (has the Windows symbol on it) and press the "R" key.
    • A Run box will open.
    • Type combofix /uninstall in the run box and click "OK". Please note the space between the "x" and the "/Uninstall", it needs to be there.

  • Please perform the following cleanup procedure

    • Double click on the OTM.exe icon on your desktop to run the program. (Note: If you are running Vista/Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
    • Once OTM has opened, click on the "CleanUp!" button.
    • Follow any prompts that you receive.

  • Removal of Tools

    • You no longer need aswMBR or Rootkit Unhooker. Please delete them from your machine.

Once you have completed the above steps you should be good to go! If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Finally, please take the time to read through the information provided below:

    Enhance your System Security

    • For an excellent list of free anti virus software, free online virus scanners, free spyware detection/removal and free firewalls, click here.

    • IMPORTANT! Please make sure you only have ONE firewall and ONE real-time antivirus installed on your system. When using "on demand" scanners, first update the detection signature files, then disconnect from the internet and disable your resident security program before running the scan.
    • Once complete, remember to re-engage your resident security before going online.

    Web Browsers and Browser Security

    Firefox
    • Firefox is generally considered to have greater browsing security in comparison to other popular programs. You can download Firefox 4.0 from here.

    No-Script
    • If you use Firefox as your default browser, No-Script can provide additional security by preventing malicious scripts from being executed on your system.
    • You can download No-Script by clicking here.

    Internet Explorer
    • The newest version of Internet Explorer is available from here.
    • Please Note: IE9 is not configured to run on XP machines.

    SpywareBlaster
    • If you use Internet Explorer as your default browser, SpywareBlaster would be a valuable addition to your online security.
    • SpywareBlaster prevents malicious ActiveX objects from being downloaded onto your system.
    • You can download SpywareBlaster by clicking here.

    Web of Trust
    • When using search engines, Web of Trust provides you with an easy way of telling the good sites from the bad and is compatible with both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
    • Coloured symbols are displayed next to search results, giving you more confidence in the links you choose to click on: Green (To go), Yellow (Caution) and Red (Stop).
    • You can download Web of Trust by clicking here.

    Keep your Software Updated
    • Outdated software can sometimes have vulnerabilities that are exploitable by malware.
    • Check if there are available updates for your installed software with Secunia's Online Software Inspector by clicking here.

    Passwords
    • Learn how to create strong passwords by clicking here and test the strength of the passwords you already use by clicking here.
