Vista PC can't browse and freezes except in safe mode

I have a Vista 32 PC which was working fine until a friend used it. He said that he could not access msn chat and wanted to reinstall it. I stupidly typed in the password for him and since then no users can browse at all and all applications freeze or hang. I have the administrator login and this is the only one that can browse or run applications in "safe mode with networking".

I rolled the PC back to a week before things went wrong but it still won't work.
I have backed up all photos, etc to CDs but I'd rather not have to reinstall the whole PC>

I have downloaded HijackThis to the desktop in "safe mode with networking"; installed it in normal mode and then run it in "safe mode with networking" (as it would not run in normal). The log is copied below. I have made no changes.

I did also run Malwarebytes but it detected no infection.
My anti-virus software is AVG paid for version.

Please can you help me as I really don't know what to do.

Thank you.

Hello there, NJH

:welcome:

I'm Conspire, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Read the entire procedure
  • It is important to perform ALL actions in sequence.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with me till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.
Hello there,

1. All tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

If you don't have an active internet connection, download the tools from another machine, and transfer them to the affected machine via USB flash drive.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 5 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

rkill.exe
rkill.com
rkill.scr
WiNlOgOn.exe
uSeRiNiT.exe

Note:

You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

At this point, you should now be able to run analysis tools.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

Checkup log

Let me know if you have any problems in performing with the steps above or any questions you may have.

Good Day!
Hello Conspire,

Thank you for helping me.

I have followed your instructions within "safe mode with networking" and here are my results.
I tried to attach the attach.txt report and the GMER report but I was not able to upload.
This is the error message that I received: "Upload failed. Please ask the administrator to ensure the uploads directory is writeable"
I have, therefore, copied and pasted the report into my post. I hope that's OK.

Thanks again,

NJH

Should I now run a repair installation or a clean installation?
Also I don't have a disk for Vista - just a repair partition and I don't know how to use it.

Sorry if these are dumb questions but I don't want to make any mistakes and make things worse.

Thanks,

NJH
You're welcome. I'd recommend a clean installation since your system file appears to be badly corrupted. Before we move on, I would like to know what is the brand model of your computer? Because usually manufacturers will have a hidden partition to restore your machine back to factory settings, so that way will save you a whole lot of time and hassles.
Hi Conspire, My PC is a Medion Akoya. It does have a drive D called "Recover". I just don't know how to use it. Thanks, NJH.
I must say that's quite unfamiliar to me. Hold on, allow me to research on how to restore to factory settings. In the mean time, could you provide me the exact model number for your PC?
Hi Conspire, It's a German make. Medion Akoya P7700D and in addition to drive D "Recover", I have found a Medion Recovery Disc for the 32bit operating system. It is for Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 The text on it says: The software included on this Recovery Disc was preinstalled on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup. Maybe I could use that instead? Thanks, NJH.
Hi Conspire, If I keep pressing F3 it asks me to choose which operating system I'd like to use or which diagnostic tool … with the only operating system being listed as Windows Vista and the only diagnostic tool listed is a memory check. It says press F8 for more detail and when I do it takes me to the usual F8 screen asking if I want to start in the 3 different versions of safe mode. Thanks, NJH
Hi, F10 generates this: Edit Windows Boot Options For: Microsoft Windows Vista Path:\ Windows\System32\Winload.exe Partition: 1 Hard Disk: f98d6e74 [ /NoExecute=Optin ] Enter= Submit Thanks, Naveen
Hi, What about Ctrl+F11 or F11? If that doesn't work, I think I'm going to send you to our tech section and I will notify one of the folks over there to help you out.
