Hello,
I am trying to fix this computer, it runs extremely slow. The compter is pretty old, and has not been kept up to date. I need your help to clean this up so it can start up and run faster. Right now, it takes about 15 minutes in start up before I can even access the internet. Below is my hijack this log, can somebody take a look and let me know how to proceed?

Hi smp182, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Let's tidy things up a bit then get some better scans.

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Please post back with
  • Security Check log
  • both OTL logs
Please describe any symptoms.

Thanks

The computer is still running very slow.
Hi smp182,

This computer has a very small amount of ram (256) for XP. We can clean it up and improve it's performance a bit. Upgrading the ram would be something to look at to gain more performance.

You have some rather old programs installed. Microsoft AntiSpyware is Windows Defenders predecessor and is no longer support in the form you have installed. We'll find a replacement.

Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2 and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise

You have 2 antivirus programs installed. These will conflict and cause system slow downs, lockups etc. Having multiple antivirus programs will not give you more protection but may result in less due to conflicts. What is the current status of these progams? Are either current?

Prevx Home

Which version is this?

We'll start with this.

Click your start button, click Control Panel > add/remove programs. Uninstall the following

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Microsoft AntiSpyware

Do not uninstall Java™ 6 Update 17

Reboot your computer after the uninstalls

Please post back with the status of the antivirus programs and we will continue.

Thanks
Hi, Both Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2 and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise are out of date and have been for a while. Prevx Home is version 2.0.9.9. I removed the two J2SE updates as you requested. I did notice today that the computer is a little quicker on startup. Please let me know what to do next. Thanks so much for your help!
Hi smp182, Ok we'll start with finding you a current antivirus program. First I need to kmow the version of McAfee you have. 1: Right Click the Virus Scan icon in the system tray 2. Select "About VirusScan Enterprise…" from the menu 3. In The About VirusScan Enterprise window the version should be listed on the left side, something similar to ver.8.7i Please post that information. Thanks
Hello, The McAfee Virus Scan is version 7.1.0. Thanks! Also, you had mentioned that 256k ram is very low for windows XP. Is there a suggested amount of RAM i should upgrade to? Is there limitations because of how old this computer is?
Hi smp182,

Also, you had mentioned that 256k ram is very low for windows XP. Is there a suggested amount of RAM i should upgrade to? Is there limitations because of how old this computer is?

Usually I say 512mb is enough though these days 1gb seems to be the norm. You can use the tool at Crucial to determine how much and what type of ram your computer can use.

First things first, let's deal with the antivirus.

Download one of these free antivirus programs to your desktop. Do not install it yet.

McAfee can be difficult to remove so we'll use a tool. Please download AppRemover and save it to your desktop.

You may want to print out or copy and paste the rest of these instruction into a notepad and save it to your desktop as you will be disonnected from the internet.

Disconnect completely from the internet, unplug the modem if necessary.

Click start > control panel > add/remove programs and uninstall

Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2

Reboot your computer.

Next

  • Double click on AppRemover.exe to run it.
  • Uncheck "Enable anonymous usage statistics. No personal data will be recorded."
  • Click on the Next button.
  • Click on "Remove Security Application"
  • Click on the Next button.
  • A scan begins, please wait. Once done, click on the Next button.
  • Now you should have a list of your installed programs, choose the one you want to remove, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
  • click on the Next button.
  • Follow the last step and reboot if asked to do so.

Next

Install the new antivirus program you previously downloaded.

Reconnect to the internet and post back when you are finished or if you have any problems and we'll continue.

Thanks
Hello, I untinstalled authentium and used appremover to untinstall mcafee. I knew this was going to happen to me, but I can no longer access the internet on the desktop. To disconnect from the internet, I unplugged the lan cable that ran from the modem to the wireless router. After uninstalling mcafee and installing avast, i plugged the cable back in, but now i get an error that says its unable to connect. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi smp182,

Reboot the computer. If there isn't a connection after the reboot

  • Go to Start > Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
  • Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection for cable and DSL
  • Right click on it and click Repair

Note: if it's a wireless connection you would right click the wireless connection under "LAN or High Speed Internet" and right-click it.
Hi. I tried that, but get an error stating "windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: renewing your ip address. Any ideas on how to fix that?
Hi. Was just wondering if there was anything else that needed to be done in regards to the cleanup process. The computer is running much better now. Thanks for all your help!
