Hi

My latest AVG scan detected 17 rootkits but when I have tried to remove them and restart the computer, they still show up on a subsequent scan.

My log is as follows:

Hello again neilski

Run DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done, click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Logs to include with next post:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Gmer.txt

Thanks

Hi neilski Can you tell me why ZoneAlarms antivirus is out of date and disabled. Was it a trial Suite that has expired?
Morning It shouldn't be disabled. It says: You are protected. No action is required. It's not a trial version but a free version Neil
Hi neilski

The reason I asked is because of this from the beginning of your DDS log:

AV: ZoneAlarm Security Suite Antivirus *Disabled/Outdated

I wanted the security check to make sure that two antiviruses weren't interfering with each other.

Run Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

I noticed that you had MBAM on your system: if you no longer have it, you can download it from here:
  • Start Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware and update it, (“Update” tab}
  • Once it is updated, click on “Scanner” tab, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Run ESET Online Scan

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

ESET OnlineScan 1. Click the Eset online Scanner button.
2. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

• Click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
• Double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
4. Click the Start button.
5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
6. Check Scan archives
7. Push the Start button.
8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
9. When the scan completes, push List of found threats
10. Push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
11. Push the back button.
12. Push Finish
If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.

Thanks

Thanks I'll have a look at it as soon as I can and get back to you. Meanwhile, Windows updates are waiting to be installed. Please try updating Windows and let me know whaat happens. Thanks Satchfan
Hi Neil

I’m sure those are “False positives”.

As far as I know, AVG free doesn’t scan for rootkits.

Also, according to an AVG moderator, alerts don’t mean there is actually a rootkit present.

Have a look at this link http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum…693#post_155693

Let’s run one more scan to be sure.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop. • double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
• click the "Scan" button to start scan
[external image: Posted Image]

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
