I recently got one of those XP Antivirus software viruses. I first tried to run mbam, but it didn't open. Then I started in safe mode and ran it and it removed a few viruses, but when I booted it up again, it was still there, so I booted in safe mode again and this time ran Avast and Mbam. Avast caught a few, but mbam ran clean. When I rebooted, it was still there. So I installed Spybot s/d and I had to end task the virus popups, but that allowed it to install and run and it looks like it got them all. I installed the updates in mbam and ran it again, and it came up clean. But I wanted to check with you guys to have you look at the Hijack this scan log I did to verify I got everything. Also, any tips for preventing this in the future? Thanks.

Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

HijackThis has largely been replaced by other tools. Since being acquired by TrendMicro, HijackThis has not been regularly updated. Many infections are now able to hide partly, or completely from a HijackThis scan. DDS includes all the scan locations of HijackThis and more.

Download and Run DDS by sUBs

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please Please copy / paste the scan reults.

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

If you have CDEmulation drivers installed (such as Daemon Tools, Alcohol120) please follow the instructions below to run DeFogger prior to and after running GMER. If you do not have any CDEmulation drivers installed, you do not need to run DeFogger and you can go right to the instructions to run GMER.

Download DeFogger

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download and Run GMER

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
I installed and ran the DDS and defogger (I am not sure if I have a program that needs defogger, so I did it just in case) They worked fine. When I went to run GMER, it said there was an issue with it and it stopped working. So I tried to run it again. The second time I ran it, it worked for longer, but then froze up my computer and now my computer is non-responsive. Should I unplug it and power it back on again? It will not even respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del. I don't know exactly what you meant by script blocking protection is, but I have an add-on that prevents java scripts I recently added to Firefox browser. I don't know how I would disable it, but do you think that caused the issue?
If it is non-responsive you may have to force a shutdown. Usually, holding the power button until it shuts off is sufficient. You shouldn't need to unplug it. When it comes back up it will likely tell you that Windows was shut down improperly and ask if you want to start in Normal or Safe mode. I'd like you to try Normal mode please.

When you run GMER again, please be sure you have your Avast anti-virus disabled during the scan.

Ideally, we'd like to run GMER in normal mode, but if it still won't run in normal mode please do the following:

Boot your computer in Safe Mode
  • Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded, start tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu option.
  • Press Enter.
  • The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Log into your usual account

Then try running GMER with just "sections" and the "c:\" drive checked, leave everything else blank. After running it, reboot into normal mode.

If you still can't get it to run, please let me know.
Ok, this is where I am at so far. I tried to run it again with Antivirus turned off for a hour. It ran for close to 4 hours, and I walked away. When I came back, GMER had turned itself off. So I booted in safe mode and did what you said and it took about 30 seconds. Then I booted it up again in normal mode and it is now running again. I turned off Avast permanently. Just to verify, the show all button is NOT checked when I start up GMER. You want it to remain unchecked, correct?
Okay, this is really aggravating. GMER ran for about 10-12 hours yesterday, and at the end of the running, it popped up a message saying Windows needed to increase memory and GMER stopped responding and I got a message saying insufficient system resources. So I shut it down and tried again, but this time it gave insufficient system resources after a couple of hours. Then I rebooted and tried it again this morning and windows gave a message saying insufficient system resources right away. Also, my computer is running really slow now. Here is what I have so far. The log from my first scan, at one point, I clicked save on the GMER tool, but I am pretty sure it came up with nothing useful. Still, here is all I could get. I also attached the "attach" file from DDS. Log from DDS: . I appreciate you trying GMER several times. Let's try a different rootkit tool since GMER just isn't working on your system.

Scan With RootKitUnHooker

  • Please choose one link and download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers and Stealth
  • Uncheck the rest. then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:/ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File > Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

In the mean time, I'll be reviewing your DDS logs. Let me know how RootkitUnhooker works or if you are still having issues running this as well.
That one worked. Great! So far things look pretty good. Let's run a current Malwarebytes log and an online scan as double checks. Different tools look in different places, so it's good to run several to ensure everything is clean. After these scans, we'll move on to some updates and how to prevent infections in the future.

Since you have Malwarebytes already on your machine, please run it by double clicking the icon on the desktop.
  • Click on the tab labeled Update and then click on the button Check for updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Note: The online scan can take awhile depending on how much data is on the machine. You may want to set it up to run at a time when you won't need to use the machine.
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
Click the green ESET Online Scanner button.
Read the End User License Agreement and check the box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click on the Start button next to it.
You may receive an alert on the address bar that "This site might require the following ActiveX control…Click here to install…". Click on that alert and then click Insall ActiveX component.
A new window will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?"".
Answer Yes to download and install the ActiveX controls that allows the scan to run.
Click Start.
Unheck Remove found threats.
Click Scan to begin.
If offered the option to get information or buy software. Just close the window.
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Here is the log from MBAM. Below that is the log from the online scanner. The online scanner found a couple of viruses, I think. The first item is a recovery file created by Spybot when you were removing the malware from your machine. While it's not hurting anything, there may be malware in that file so it's best to go ahead and remove it.

Show Hidden Files and Folders
  • * Go to Start>Control panel>Folder Options>View
    * Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    * Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    * Close the window with ok

Then navigate to the following, right-click and delete the file:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\FraudInternetSecurity5.zip

After you have deleted the file, please reverse the steps above to once again hide hidden files and folders.

We'll take care of the other file in the next steps.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

There are no logs to post after these steps. Please let me know when you are done, and how the machine is running at this point.
I did all of that. ATF cleaner deleted 6 gigabytes of data. It seems to be working fine. I keep getting a popup in the bottom right saying my computer might be at risk because the automatic updates are turned off. But other than that, it seems to be working fine. That is a popup I have been seeing the whole time, though. When I rebooted, Firefox wouldn't start. After waiting 15 minutes, I just rebooted again. I waited about 15 minutes and then started Firefox and it started fine.
Great job! Your logs appear to be malware free and you do not appear to be experiencing any malware related problems.
Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer malware free and secure:

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.
Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
* Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools
* Click "System Restore"
* Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next"
* Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
* Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
* Click "OK"
* Click the "More Options" Tab.
* Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

I would strongly urge you to update to Service Pack 3. There have been many security related updates that you cannot apply until you have installed SP3. It may take many times returning to the update site to get all the updates applied. They build upon one another, and often until you have one installed, you can't see the others. You don't need to do them all in one sitting, but keep at it until you have all your updates. (I recommend all critical and optional for best performance of your machine.)

You can follow these directions to enable automatic updates for the future so that you can continue to stay up to date.

Use and Update your AntiVirus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
Your log doesn't appear to show a third-party software firewall installed - if you have one, and I've missed it, please ignore this. I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Use only one antivirus and one firewall on your machine
Having more than one anti-virus program and one firewall on your machine, even if only one is running, can cause conflicts and slowdowns in the performance of the machine.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
13. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Keep your Java, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Up to Date
Older versions of these programs can contain security vulnerabilities. It is very important to keep them updated.

Update and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software making sure you update definitions each time you scan.

To simplify making sure you have the latest version of many of your security programs and applications, you may want to consider:
Secunia's Personal Software Inspector (PSI). It is a free utility that scans your computer for installed applications and checks to see if they have the latest security patches and updates. If it finds any applications with possible security issues, links and/or instructions are provided for the necessariy updates.

Filehippo's Update Checker. It is free utilitiy that scan your computer for installed software, checks the versions and then sends this information to see if there are any newer releases. Available software updates are displayed and you can decide which ones to download and install. Among many other types of programs, they includes a number of the Anti-Spyware, Firewall/Security and Anti-Virus programs that have been recommended (though not all of them). Note: Definition files should be updated from within the programs themselves. The Update Checker look for newer versions of the software program, not definition files.
