since today, when i do a google search it has been redirecting me to unrelated sites. only google. the other search engines were fine. i thought i had the google redirect virus since i only had problems with google, so i followed the instructions in the self help fixes forum… the tdss killer found something and i had it removed. after i rebooted the computer, my problem seems to have gotten worse. after rebooting my computer, the other search engines have started redirecting me to unrelated sites too. i guess my computer's still unclean.

Hello,
Welcome to WhatTheTech. My name is mowman, and I will be helping you fix your problems.

If you do not make a reply in 3 days, we will have to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the Options button at the top bar of this topic and Track this topic. The topics you are tracking can be found by clicking on My Topics at the top of any page.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:

•Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
•If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
•Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
•Please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply.
Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under Custom Scan paste this in

i have a new problem. my firewall keeps turning off. and i just got a fake antivirus ad saying i'm infected.
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
by the way, the ad keeps on reappearing, and the fake antivirus' name is security shield, if that information helps. edit: sorry for the double post. shall i download combofix now and follow the instructions?
Download This file and save to your desktop.

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the iExplore.exe icon in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Security Shield and other Rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that RKill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by Security Shield when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close RKill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run RKill again.

Then continue with the combofix instructions
sorry for asking too many questions, but, does it matter on which user account i follow the procedures you've given? i was using my account when i encountered the search engine redirection problems and the firewall turning off. then the security shield thing (and also the firewall turning off) appeared when my sister was using this computer on her account. both of our accounts are administrator accounts. should i do it in my sister's account or mine, or does it not matter which account i'm using?
i ran iexplore.exe and it terminated the malware processes it found. it also disabled the proxy server on my computer.. it said to double-click the registry file on my desktop to restore it. i couldn't access the internet after that, so i double-clicked the file to add it to the registry. i still couldn't access the internet, however, so i shut down my computer and turn it on again. i can access the internet now, but, aren't the malware processes iexpore found working again after i shut down my computer? should i continue with the combofix instructions now or run iexplore again? also, security shield was installed in my sister's account.. on mine, it apparently isn't.. it's still the same if i follow your instructions in this account, right?
We are getting nowhere fast here, without logs I cannot clean the machine.Try to do any of the following in any account.Run iexplore first if you have to.

1.Run Combofix
2.Run Malwarebytes you have installed, update it first if possible
3.Run OTL again.

Please try to post some logs in your next reply.
i'm really sorry for the inconvenience, but i think combofix isn't working right. last night i scanned and it went on for 2+ hours, which is strange because it said it typically doesn't take more than 10 or so minutes. so i closed it. and then i ran it again a few hours ago, and again it ran for 3+ hours. i closed it again. i read on bleepingcomputer.com that while combofix is scanning, it's supposed to show the completed stages, or something like that. when it was scanning on mine, none showed. what do i do now? i can't do the other instructions you posted without having to run combofix first… which seems like it's not working normally. someone told me to uninstall and reinstall it but i'm a bit reluctant to do so.
