My 80some year old father uses this pc mostly for emails…he uses the free online AOL email as they were used to having AOL with their old dial up. Unfortunately he likes to click on links from emails just to see what they are. I know he installed something called crush revealer a while back and there was a new install of Windows feature pack that I could not uninstall a few weeks ago. He says now when he tries to respond to an email the cursor will not go down into the body of the email to allow him to type a reply. At times he is also unable to compose an email in AOL. His home page had been changed in Firefox a while back but I'm sorry I do not know what it was - I just restored it to Google. Would you please take a look at the logs and help me get it cleaned up…..once it is clean I will clone the drive and be able to restore it to good working condition if this happens again. Thank you so very very much.

Many thanks in advance!
Hi hpt1,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

This system appears to be overdue for a little housekeeping.

Let's start this way:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Thank you very much for your help Tomk - here is the log you requested:

It appears you have replaced your parents name with x's in the log. You will need to replace the x's with the correct name in the following script:

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    FireFox::
    FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\xxxx xxxxx\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\rcq5qwm8.default\
    FF - Ext: Java Console: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} - c:\program files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    FF - Ext: Java Console: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0013-ABCDEFFEDCBA} - c:\program files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0013-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    FF - Ext: Java Console: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0020-ABCDEFFEDCBA} - c:\program files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0020-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then after posting the resultant log, let's get your windows updated to SP3.

Download SP3 from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/deta…;displaylang=en

Then just double click on the file to install it.

Let me know how it goes.
Yes I did x out their names - long story but thanks for your understanding and patience - anyway here is the log - oh and combofix said there was a new version when i ran it this time however i did not update it - i hope that is ok.

havent used it much as was waiting for the all clear but as far as i can tell its good. that blu-ray enhancement things seems to be gone thank goodness. do you need a final scan or anything to give the all clear? thank you…
hpt1.

Let's get an online scan as a double check:

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Then please run DDS again and post the logs so I can give it a final overlook.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the scan!

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered
  • Please save the resulting log to be posted in your next reply.
  • Reboot your computer
Please post the OTL log.
whew had a problem with OTL not responding for some reason - sat there for 45 minutes saying not to interrupt but when i clicked the mouse it said it was not responding - so i rebooted then disabled antivirus and malwarebytes through the task manager and then it ran fine…..i hope this did not mess up anything! anyway, here is the log after it rebooted. All processes killed ========== PROCESSES ========== ========== FILES ========== C:\Program Files\Big Kahuna Reef 2\Big Kahuna Reef 2.exe moved successfully. ========== COMMANDS ========== Restore points cleared and new OTL Restore Point set! hpt1,

The report from OTL appears to show that everything went as planned. I must say I've never had OTL "hang" before. Usually it just a couple minutes.

However, if it appears to be running right…. I'm not seeing anything… but I'd like to do one more thing before I let you go:

Your error log shows that there were some errors on the hard drive a week or so ago. Let's make sure that's taken care of:

Hold your windows key and press R to bring up the run box. In that box type chkdsk /r and click OK. A "black" window should pop up and ask you if you want to run chkdsk on next reboot. Press y.

Then reboot and let it run. It will look for any errors on the harddrive and attempt to repair them.

Let me know how it goes.
ok that scan DID replace some "bad clusters in file 26633…..i believe it said..of name PROGRA~1\TICATA~1\REFLEX~\unins000.exe so hopefully that will help also!!! the only thing i notice is that it takes a few seconds after firefox loads up before i am unable to move the cursor on a page….otherwise things are looking much much better!!
Obviously, the more add-ons that are installed in Firefox, the slower it will react. Therefore I reccomend that you keep these to a minimum… that being said… you might want to have a look at SpeedyFox. Some report a significant increase in speed, I'd say I've noticed some increase.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
