Hi guys,

My son was using this computer and went to log into one of the Wiki sites he uses. He immediatly started having error messages, popups that claimed this computer had been infected with 30 trojans and spyware and all the things these kinds of infections do. I knew I had not downloaded any anti-virus called XP Antispyware 2011so I figured that was the culprit. I did run Spybot S&D for a few minutes but it was taking a long time and had found 3 things that looked pretty bad, so I stopped that, updated Malwarebytes and ran it. I got 13 more spyware and trojans from that scan, cleaned it up and reran the program. All appears ok but I know it can still be infected so I am here to see what we need to do to make sure we got this thing cleaned out.

First is a log from Spybot S&D and I'm really not sure what this is but I thought it may be helpful to post.

Thanks so much!
Hello CoolCat and :welcome:

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

Lets take a look at the machine with the following scans:

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click on the DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    [external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOTKIT" entries

Please post the DDS logs and the GMER log in your next reply. If you encounter any problems with the scans come back and let me know.

I am not sure how to zip this as it's not a big file at all and I don't believe I have a zipper program other than what comes with AOL. What do I do? Can I email the text to my other computer and zip it on there, then upload it? Thanks

With this GMER program, I can't locate (Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)) on the program unless it is just C:\ so I will go ahead and uncheck that one and hope i've done the right thing. Thx
Hello CoolCat

so I will go ahead and uncheck that one

Please leave C checked (the instuctions just mean that if you have other drives or partitions besides C, these do not have to be scanned, but you don't have them since they are not listed) :)
I have a big problem, now, with my AOL. I tried to come back and post the log and am getting this error. Status: 513 Misconfigured Proxy Route Cache-Control: no-cache Pragma: no-cache Connection: close Content-Type: text/html ** Then I tried other websites and I am getting the same error.
Oh boy, this took hours and hours and this is all there is.

Hello CoolCat

Thank you for the logs.

I have a big problem, now, with my AOL

Thats a little odd - DDS and GMER make no system changes. If you are unable to connect to the net using the infected system please download the required tools using a different machine and transfer them using a flash drive or by burning them to disk.

  • Combofix

  • Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

  • VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here .
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • Notes: Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  • Should there be issues with internet afterward:

In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> Lan Settings -> uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

In Firefox: Tools Menu -> Options… -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection and uncheck the proxyserver, set it to No Proxy.

Please post the ComboFix log in your next reply and let me know if you are still having problems with your AOL after running it.
OK, sorry this took so long to get back to. AOL seems to be ok now. We had also been having a problem with the sound volume button. It would only go up half way and this has been going on for about a month. All of a sudden, it's working again but the sound is shaky and rather garbled.

Also, when I started ComboFix, I got a warning that it had detected about 50 different Aviras running on the computer and active when I had shut it off before I even got online to download ComboFix. I clicked that off and it came right back, then disappeard by itself.

There was no window and button to "continue" scanning for malware. But then I didn't sit here with the computer. ComboFix acted like it was going to take forever, again, like the other program did so I left the room. Apparently, that was not the case and mabye that popped up on the screen, then went away by itself? I do have a rather long log, however, so here is that.

Thank you!

Hello Coolcat

Thank you for the log.

I got a warning that it had detected about 50 different Aviras running on the computer

I see them in your log. There are a number of things that we have to deal with here. Lets start with the following:

  • Please work through the following steps

  • Open Notepad (Click on "Start", then on "Run" and type "notepad" (without quotations) in the Open field, then click on "OK").
  • NOTE: Do not Use Wordpad or any other text editor except Notepad or the script will fail.
  • Copy and Paste the text in the quotebox below into the open Notepad window:

  • Save this as "CFScript.txt" (including the quotation marks), change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
  • Once the log is produced, re-engage your resident anti virus.

Please download and run the following tool: http://noahdfear.net/downloads/HAMeb_check.exe

Once the tool has completed its run, please post the log created in your next reply.
OK, I did as instructed. Immediatly, the popup or window from ComboFix started again with the warning that x amount of Aviras were running when in fact, I had shut it off at the toolbar icon, just like last time. It happened twice, just like last time, then ComboFix opened. I wasn't thinking that was supposed to happen yet so I waited a few minutes and ComboFix started in a blue DOS box, like it did before. That's where I may have made a mistake because I thought it wasn't supposed to do that so I stopped it. Then I repeated the entire process a second time and that had identical results as the 1st scan today so I went ahead and let it run and have the log here.

Also, I had done a lot of desktop cleanup of too many photos & folders to be a good thing and have noticed there is an unusual (for me) icon on the desktop with a Yahoo logo on it. It's name is go.dredirectingat.com and I haven't had a chance to ask my son if he downloaded something like that to the desktop or not. I let it sit but I did check the properties, etc. I can find nothing on it other than it says it can be opened in Yahoo. Suspicious if you ask me!

Here's the ComboFix log. Downloading the next program right after I post this. And thanks! :-)

Hello CoolCat

Thank you for the logs.

It's name is go.dredirectingat.com and I haven't had a chance to ask my son if he downloaded something like that to the desktop or not. I let it sit but I did check the properties, etc. I can find nothing on it other than it says it can be opened in Yahoo. Suspicious if you ask me!

Leave it where it is for the moment but do not click on it.

We will try to take care of the multiple avira's in due course but right now I would like to proceed as follows:

Please read through all of these instruction before beginning (you may also find it helpful to print them out).

  • Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix by clicking here and save the file to your desktop.
  • Next, please make sure that you Close all other open programs and windows.
  • Double click on the file to run it and follow any prompts.
  • If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
  • Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start > Run and type the following bolded command into the run box, then hit Enter:
helpasst -mbrt
  • NOTE: Please make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
  • When the tool completes its run, a log will open.
  • Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start > Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter:
mbr -f
  • Now, please do the Start > Run > mbr -f command a second time.
  • Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
  • Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start > Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
helpasst -mbrt
  • NOTE: Please make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
  • When the tool completes its run, a log will open.
  • Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

**Important note to Dell Users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).
