Rootkit Infection - Norton does not find anything but detects behavior

It looks as though I have some type of rootkit infection. Norton is detecting the activity, but is not detecting the perpetrator. Based on what I've seen on your site, you guys have seen this multiple times before and know your stuff. Norton is saying the attack is resulting from \DEVICE\HARDDISKVOLUME1\PROGRAMFILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\IEXPLORE.EXE.

Per your instructions, I've downloaded HiJackThis and run it. I did receive a couple of errors when running, but it completed Here's the log. I will also post logs from DDS after this. When I ran DDS, it instructed me to ZIP the attach.txt file, so I did this, even though the forum instructions did not specifiy this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not delete anything unless instructed to.
  • DO NOT use tools such as ComboFix without supervision.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clean.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
===================================================

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
===================================================

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
I downloaded MBAM, installed it, and ran it and it seemed to do fine. I downloaded ComboFix, right-clicked on my Norton Anti-Virus icon in the system tray and disabled it, and ran ComboFix. I got an error message stating C:\32788R22FWJFW\License\iexplore.exe could not be closed. I waited about 5 minutes and clicked OK to close it. The computer basically froze. Now, when I reboot the machine, Windows starts up and I get to the logon screen (there are 4 users on the machine). When I select my user profile and enter my password, I get the "Loading your personal settings" message and the machine just stays there. I've shut down the machine and tried it a couple of times and nothing changes. I have not tried any of the other user profiles. Any ideas?
Hi RBG,

Sounds like that infection is giving you all sorts of trouble.

Let's try booting into safemode.

To boot into safe mode follow these steps:
  • Turn on or restart your computer
  • As the computer is booting, press and hold your F8 Key
  • This should bring up the Windows Advanced Options Menu
  • Use your arrow keys to move to Safe Mode and press your Enter Key

Are you able to see your desktop now? Give combofix a go if it boots up fine.
It started up in Safe Mode (haven't tried it with networking, but will need it eventually to send the files). I started up ComboFix and got the same type of message–couldn't end program c:\32788R22FWJFW\License\iexplore.exe. This time, however, the message went away and it looks like it's running.
I started ComboFix while in Safe Mode with no networking. ComboFix said it didn't like my version of Microsoft Recovery Console and wanted to download a new one. I thought the message said it wouldn't fix any files unless it was installed, so I clicked when it asked if it should download it. Does this mean it's doing it's thing without Recovery Console installed?
It won't do its thing unless recovery console is installed, so restart your computer and boot into safe mode WITH networking. Run combofix again.

Thanks again for your help.
No problem. How's the computer running now? Are you able to boot normally?

I need you to do the following:

Enable hidden files and folders:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.
  • Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
===================================================

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Browse button and search for the following file: c:\windows\system32\noisei.dll
  • Click Open
  • Then click Send File
  • Please be patient while the file is scanned.
  • Once the scan results appear, please provide them in your next reply.
If it says already scanned – click "reanalyze now"

Please post the results in your next reply.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
The virustotal thing isn't producing any results. I upload the file and it flashes a brief message about not closing your browser window and then goes back to the virus total homepage. I'm currently working on the ESET scanner.
Another question–I have an external drive attached to my machine. If I back up my data files to this drive, can you say whether or not those files will be corrupted? The reason I ask is that, if this doesn't clean it off, I could always wipe the disk and reinstall the OS. Please let me know your thoughts.
RBG, try uploading the file here: http://virusscan.jotti.org/en

Let me know the results.

The files you back up to your external drive should be fine. I'd recommend you run Flash Disinfector with your external plugged in, so any autorun viruses will be removed.

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Your computer seems to be clean, but I'll have to see the results of the ESET scan before giving you the green light. Are you able to boot up the computer normally? Any issues?
