Hangs up on wallpaper and frequently crashes

My computer seems to have a malware infection that is getting worse and worse. When booting up, windows loads my wallpaper than seems to get stuck. It takes another 5 minutes or more before my toolbar and icons show up. Once up and running, the computer is crashing frequently. It seems to be explorer that is crashing.

  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

heyheyitsryan, That is only half the information. There should have been two logs. DDS.txt (which you have posted) and attach.txt (which you haven't.) I need to see the other one also. If you didn't save it… please rerun DDS again and post both logs.

I'm not seeing any malware… let's give this a try:

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I'm going to try restarting again to see how long it takes. I did a restart as per the directions after running the TFC software and it took 5 or 10 minutes to boot up. I thought it might have taken so long because the TFC software was still finishing tasks after the reboot, so I restarted again. It still took 5 - 10 minutes to boot the second time. Also, when I told the computer to restart i got a force close window for explorer. I'm wondering if explorer has somehow become corrupted.

Let's check the system files.

You will need your system disk in case it needs to "fix" a file.

Hold your Windows key and press R to open the run box.

In the box type SFC /scannow and click OK

Then just let it run. If it needs to rebuild a file… it may ask you to insert your windows disk.

It never asked for the system disk, but it did seem to help. It still hung on the wallpaper when I rebooted, but only for a few seconds this time. Is it possible that something would have been repaired without needing the system disk?

Yes. "uncorrupted" files may have been onboard already in a repair partition or an i386 folder (or perhaps even the dllcache).

I don't think I can do you anymore good. If you continue to have troubles… I suggest that you post in the Windows forum and seek help from the Tech Team.

Meanwhile… let's clean up.

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

My computer took 18 minutes to boot this morning, but at least i know it's not malware. I'll see if they have any suggestions in the windows forum. Thanks for your help!

heyheyitsryan, I would agree that something doesn't seem to be right. 18 minutes is a long time, but I'm just not finding the malware. If the Tech Team finds anything "hinky" that I missed…. they'll send you back. One way or another… working together we will surely achieve some sort of resolution. Good Luck and Be Well. :thumbup:
