Hi Everybody!
Thank you for the opportunity to participate here. Thanks for allowing me to share and learn with you.
Sample of Applied Learning - Can Anyone Relate to This Analogy?
At age 16, my son began his course work in Driver's Ed. He aced the class and aced the written test. The state then issued him a permit to begin "behind the wheel" training.
My smart son, soon bound to pursue his chosen fields in Physics & Engineering, was filled with confidence and pride. He sat for the first time in the driver's seat in an empty parking lot, awaiting direction from me to start the car and commence driving.
He looked at me quizzically - perplexed at the apparent look of apprehension on my face. He stated that he knows exactly what to do because of all his study. He wondered how I could feel nervous, especially after he had "proven" himself by acing the written test.
The tour around the parking lot went smoothly enough, and so did various parking and other basic maneuvers. After a few sessions of this, I advanced him to "quiet-residential-street" driving. We hadn't gone 3 blocks before he said to me:
"Mom! I can't believe how much you really don't know about driving, even when you have memorized every rule and direction in the book! Everything's so different when you're actually behind the wheel!"
And so it goes. Here's to those of us new to being "actually behind the wheel". As for me, I've still got some preliminary learning and "parking lot" practice to do! Thanks WTT!
Regards,
"Mom! I can't believe how much you really don't know about driving, even when you have memorized every rule and direction in the book! Everything's so different when you're actually behind the wheel!"
Definitely a moment of satori.
If only all the rest of us took similar heed in important areas of our lives.
Elizabeth Clare,
Your story reminds me of a TV show I saw years ago. I believe it was called "Head of the Class". It was about an advanced classroom of all the "gifted" students in the school. On this particular episode… some how or another they were challenged to a volleyball game (I think). They did what "nerds" do… they studied every book they could find on volleyball. Memorized the rule book. They learned everything there was to know about volleyball… yet none of them had ever played it until the day of the big game. They were totally shocked when they were totally destroyed on the court. There is often a disconnect between knowing and doing.
@Doug
Satori ??
Did you really know what that means or have you been spending your "free time" reading some weird thesaurus?
Its Doug's middle name……We always used to address him thus:
"O wise and great enlightened one"
Perhaps on the forums, we should use this form of address in the future?…
All right, you two!
This "wise and enlightened one" who occasionally experiences "satori", is also wearing a heavy pair of size 13 leather lace up boots.
Good for wading through what you two are spreading.
