Hello. I have a Dell 2.66 GHz, 512 MB ram desktop computer. Whenever I'm on the internet, with just one or maybe 2 windows open, the computer runs extremely slow, times out, and/or my Norton Antivirus gives me various warnings such as 'high memory usage' or 'high CPU usage'. I've filled 46.7gb of 70.8gb of available space. Thanks for your help on this, its so great that you guys provide this service. Here's my HijackThis scan.

Thanks Satchfan. I don't know how to do the first thing you say to do - 'disable any script blocking protection' - sorry. I had to skip that step but I did all the rest just as you said. Hi Satchfan, Something went wrong - in the middle of the gmer scan (about 20-30 minutes in), the computer went all bue, and saida problem has been detected. IT gave me this code: driver_irQL_NOT_LESS_OR_Equal It also said atapl.sys-address F87CDaF2 base at f87c8000 datestamp 4802539d It said i had to shut down the computer and restart it. I did, and tried to open theinternet to come on to tell you about this, when a dialog box popped up and said 'the system has recovered from a serious error." Not sure what happened - can you please assist? Thanks, Erin
Erin

Don't worry, this can happen and does not mean anything bad at this point.

Please run GMER again, but this time uncheck everything EXCEPT "Sections" and "C:\" .
Thanks Satchfan!

Hi iamerin

P2P - I see you have P2P software, (Frostwire), installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infection. If your computer is infected, it almost certainly contributed to your current situation.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are more often than not, infected. The bad guys use P2P file-sharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Please see this topic for more information:

Perils of P2P File Sharing.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it now. You can do so via Control Panel, Programs, and then Programs and Features.

Should you decide to keep it, please don’t use it until we have finished up here.

===================================================

Run AVG removal tool

There are remnants of AVG on your computer which might interfere with some of the tools we use. Please download and run AVG Removal Tool from here

===================================================

Run TDSSKiller

Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
  • Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
  • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\) called TDSSKiller_*** (*** denotes version & date)

Satchfan
Thanks Satchfan. I uninstalled Frostwire; thanks for your direction on that. As far as the TDSSKiller, no malicious objects were found. It didn't give me an option to do Continue>Reboot now, so i just went and copied the log and am posting ithere. I hope that's ok. 2011/04/18 19:05:15.0500 2688 TDSS rootkit removing tool 2.4.21.0 Mar 10 2011 12:26:28 2011/04/18 19:05:15.0843 2688 Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Satchfan
Hi Satchfan, I'm sorry to say I don't know about the file that is created when I use the Remote Desktop Connecton. That connection gets me in to my employer's server. I asked our IT guy about it at work today, but he couldn't tell me what file might be created when i use the remote desktop connection. He said the only things that might be created when i remote in to work would be 'temp files'. Hi iamrein

Run OTL • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)
• Post the OTL.txt log it produces in your next reply.
Please post back with the log

Can you tell me how your computer is running now and if there are any problems.

Satchfan
Hi Satchfan,

I followed your direction to run the OTL quickscan, and I made sure that the 2 checkboxes were unchecked, but when i hit quickscan, i think they auto-checked themselves, becuase they were checked while the scan ran. So i hope that's ok. Also, wouldnt you know it, as the scan was running and i was sitting here watching it, i got a warning saying 'High memory usage by Internet Explorer'. The only things open were this forums page, and the OTL scan. NO other internet windows, nothing else….

I just tried to open a new browser window to test speed, but it still seems to take a long time to open a browser window…. and the computer is somewhat slow in responding when i type.

Here is the OTL log. Thanks Satchfan!
