Hi,
My system was attacked and file:C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MSSecurity\wscntfy.dll was quarantined. Now the system is getting repeated attacks of Backdoor:Win32/Mokspolx.A against file:C:\Windows\Temp\FXSTIFFDebugLogFile.txt->(VFS:wscntfy.ocx#3)
Would someone please review my HJT log and reccomend how to cleanup my system? Thanks

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

XP Users

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Vista Users

To enable the viewing of hidden and protected system files in Windows Vista please follow these steps:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Click on the Start button. This is the small round button with the Windows flag in the lower left corner.

Click on the Control Panel menu option.
When the control panel opens you can either be in Classic View or Control Panel Home view:

If you are in the Classic View do the following:
Double-click on the Folder Options icon.
Click on the View tab.

If you are in the Control Panel Home view do the following:

Click on the Appearance and Personalization link.
Click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

I've been seeing some Java infections lately.

Whether you wish to continue with cleaning or not, you should be aware that you may have been infected by a backdoor trojan. This type of program has the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you are using your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

Please post back to let me know how you wish to proceed.
I operate my business from this computer, I never store passwords for financial institutions in my browser. I always type them in manually. The only contiguous information I have for sensitive accounts is in a password protected Word doc, inside a password protected zip file. Since browsers are encrypted and I had no passwords stored in my temporary Internet files (only cookies for online email accounts, no passwords there either) then what do you think the chances are my account(s) data will be at risk? Could a hacker be logging my keystrokes without my knowledge. Is there a way to be more secure and detect with this system by monitoring my ports and / or adding encryption? It will be very expensive and time consuming for me to update my OS; this is a production machine for CAD. Could you please describe the risks in more detail and what I might do to guard against the threat? Thanks.
Lets see what we find and go from there.

Note: if the Cure option is not there, please select 'Skip'.

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

please post the contents of that log TDSSKiller log.
MSE had previously reported removing all detected threats so I don't understand how the attacks are still coming. Could it be through my Virtual Machine? I'm guessing and grasping at anything that makes sense. MSE had previously reported removing all detected threats so I don't understand how the attacks are still coming.

We will see if we can findout why.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have XP SP3, use the XP SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Well LD I thought I was golden but I waited awhile and had another detection at 20:45 EST and looking back in the LOG to the 13th when they started I see that I have a detection & Removal once every hour around 45 minutes on the hour as long as the machine is awake. It is always Items: file:C:\Windows\temp\FXSTIFFDebugLogFile.txt->(VFS:wscntfy.ocx#3) Maybe it's a false positive but I don't know if I could be that lucky. Yes, but as I said only once about every hour, I waited again, this time at 21:54 EST. I have tried to anticipate the appearance of the file by watching the Temp directory contents but MSE catches the alert and removes the file before I can find the text file appearing in the temp dir
I found some conversations on related acts by searching for FXSTIFFDebugLogFile.txt but no resolutions:

AND THESE RESULTS:

This is why I thought it could be a false positive but it's just a WAG on my part ;-D. Also now when I run Adobe Acrobat I get a corrupt registry warning error for a Caprure 3D Plugin being damaged and needing repaired. It's not a big deal for me as I rarely use it but it could be related. If you think it's safe I just want to know that my financial transactions are reasonably safe if that's possible with this system.
Here's what I think but I can't prove it:

Maybe the temporary text file has a string in it which registers as a virus.

I actually deleted the Windows\Temp DIR to test if I would still get an alert.

I did check the contents of a .tmp file and I am concerned, here are some of the ascii strings interspersed with machine language from the file:

So maybe it's a botched attempt to get a backdoor to my banking info, I don't know.
Thank You for the donation. :D

Make sure you uninstall Combofix if you don't want to run it again.

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

For XP:
  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

For Vista / Windows 7
  • Click START Search
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.
You are welcome LD, I have some deadlines, so I cannot spend more time on this issue until next week. Unbeknownst to me the Windows\Temp directory was recreated on my system , I tried to copy 2 files appearing there but they were deleted before I could take ownership. I believe my HP Printer software is creating the folder because one file remains (hpqddsvc.log), since the folder was recreated I received an Alert from MSE, without the folder I do not receive Alerts. I am desperate for disk space, I'm down to 300MB free on a 75GB OS partition (I have (2) 150GB Raptors (I mirror them) split in 2 partitions: OS / DATA) , I'm constantly running disk clean up, deleting orphaned dmp files, etc. The new system restore points have added to my problems I'm sure. I will probably have to eliminate hibernation soon to buy time. I will have to upgrade to (2) 1TB drives soon, I can't afford high capacity Raptors so I will have to drop down to 7,200 rpm drives. I'm probably going to submit these issues to MS security support to see what their thoughts are, have a good weekend, thanks again.
