Hi guys,

Computer runs slowly on start up which I can kinda live with, but more recently it is v v laggy, almost hanging if several pages of the web are open at once. I play PWI and again the game has become v v laggy, so I wonder if I have picked up some kind of nasty.

I have run Hijack this and post the log below.

I will be away from Tuesday 29th 2pm CMT until Thursday 9am GMT. Thanks

Hello Andrew1959 and welcome to the WTT forum.

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem. Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:
• Please do not install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
• Please do not run any scans other than those requested
• Please follow all instructions in the order posted
• Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
• If you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
• Please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
Please note that I am still in training and my replies need to be checked by an expert in order for you to receive the best possible advice. This may result in a small delay between my posts but I shall try to keep this to a minimum.

I am looking through your log now and will reply as soon as possible.

Satchfan
Hello again ANDREW1959

You appear to have installed a “rogue” adware program. Ad-Aware is a legitimate program by Lavasoft whereas Adware Professional is what is known as rogue software which does not have your good intentions at heart..

We’ll need to run some more scans to clean it up and make sure it hasn’t invited any friends along.

Uninstall the program, if present:
1. Click Start, Control Panel, Programs, and then Programs and Features.
2. Click on Adware Professional and then Uninstall.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Run HijackThis

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Adware Professional] C:\Program Files\Adware Professional\Adware Professional.exe

Close all windows except for HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Run DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done, click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Logs to include with next post:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Gmer.txt

Thanks

Hi Andrew

Nothing in those logs but there are a few more things we need to sort out.

You have Windows updates waiting to be installed. Please try installing them. You can also install them by going to Windows website at:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Run Security Check

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Please send checkup.txt and let me know if you managed to complete the Windows update

Also let me know if you are aware of any problems with your computer now.

Hi, Its all gone pear shaped!! Hi Andrew

I think this may be another “Rogue” program but before we can do anything we must first end the processes that belong to this program so that it does not interfere with the cleaning procedure.

It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files
on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.

Print out these instructions as we may need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

Download and run Rkill

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 5 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.
  • rkill.exe
  • rkill.com
  • rkill.scr
  • WiNlOgOn.exe
  • uSeRiNiT.exe
Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please include mbam.txt in your reply and describe how your computer is behaving now.

Satchfan
Hi, I downloaded rkill and ran it, then dowloaded Malaware-anti malware, but on opening this as it was installing, the message following popped up and the green installation bar turned from green to red and stopped. Set up Access is denied **************************** Second message Windows cannot find 'nild\iexplore.exe' Make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again. ************************************** I have tried it more than once and the same messages appear and it stops opening. Sorry, I await your further directions. The computer still has that black screen and no access or even acknowledgement of all the files /pictures etc that were stored on it .
Andrew

Boot to Safe mode and see if you can run Malwarebytes

To Enter Safemode• Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
• As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY - this will bring up a menu.
• Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
• Then press Enter on your keyboard
Let me know how it goes
Hi Satchfan, More bad news to report I'm afraid. I did what you asked and even in safe mode it stops it. I get as far as it starting to open and as before the bar gets 2/3 the way open and suddenly up pops a message to say set up cancelled.
Hi, ok in safe mode I run rkill then malabyte it starts to unload and as before the nessage pops up to say it has stopped it!! tried it a couple of times closely following your directions but same result. Sorry
Andrew

Run RogueKiller

Download RogueKiller to your desktop.
close all running programs
for Windows Vista/Seven, right click -> run as administrator, for XP simply double-click on RogueKiller.exe
when prompted, type 1 and press Enter
the RKreport.txt will be generated next to the executable, (on the desktop).
If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe

Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.
HI at last lol!
