Hi, i clicked on an image in google images, it sparked something to download, i managed to close whatever it was before it finished downloading, then AVG started catching things.

I scanned with Malewarebytes, Ad-aware, and AVG. All picked something up. I rebooted and tried again, and found some more stuff. I think i may need pro. help.

AVG is also acting kinda sketchy, flickering and stuff, i don't remember it acting funky like that before, i dunno. here is the HJT

Hello addman and welcome to WhatTheTech. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Any underlined text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

DDS.scr
DDS.com
DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs
  • GMER log
Hello and thx for your help.

While i was running these programs i was wondering to myself, Is there any sensitive information being shared in these log files? There is so much stuff on here, not that i have any choice but, i'm just curious.

Also, If something malicious is found, is there anyway to determine the date of infection?

Thx again

There is nothing particularly sensitive in these logs. They are really not much different than any of the thousands that get posted in the various help forums every day.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) P2P - I see you have P2P software (BitTorrent) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to malware infections. Please see this post for more information. I recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. If you choose to keep these applications, please do not use them until our fixes at WTT are complete.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled. This is because AVG falsely detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first. You may do this through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs or you can use this tool for a more complete removal:

Download AppRemover from here saving it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run AppRemover
  • Follow the prompts to remove AVG
  • Reboot
Once you've removed AVG with this tool please continue with these instructions
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

My IT friend came over last nite and installed a new Virus software NOD32, we ran it and it removed 11 things. I'm curious what you are seeing? addman: If you have someone with IT expertise to help you, that's good. When you are running scans and installing applications between posts though it makes it more difficult for me to help you. If you'd like to continue here, I'm going to have to ask that you please stop making changes to the machine on your own (or with professional help). I'm not seeing any remaining malware, but you have some system files failing a check of their digital signatures and you don't have any replacements already in the PC. Do you have access to a Windows XP Pro SP3 install disk?
Hi, Yes, sorry bout that, afterwards I realized it may have created more confusion for you, I assure you i won't be doing anything further. He is in IT but no malware profession. I was interested to see this NOD 32 catch several files (old mp3) all labelled variant of WMA TrojanDownloader.GetCodec.gen.trojan - were these anything to worry about? I do have a windows xp sp3 disk, what is this file we need to find? Also, after I ran this NOD, on reboot my winpatrol indicated a change to my HOST file, I kept declining it, but the 10 minutes i let my gf on my computer she accepted the changes. Can we look into this? Thanks alot McMuphy
addman:

Were those infected mp3's downloaded from p2p by chance? That is usually when we see that. I'll check that HOSTS file before we finish. Please do this next - you will need your install disk:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Insert the Windows XP installation disk.

1. ClickStart > Run or press the Windows Key + R Then type cmd in the run box and press "OK" to open the command prompt window

2. Enter the following commands, one at a time, at the prompt and press "Enter" after each one. Refer to the quote box under the commands for the location of the spaces which are very important. After pressing "Enter" you should see a message that says, "one file(s) expanded successfully"

Note: x = the drive letter designation for your CD/DVD drive - replace x with the appropriate letter for your PC.

expand x:\i386\usp10.dl_ -r c:\windows\system32

expand x:\i386\wscntfy.ex_ c:\windows\system32

expandx:\i386\usp10.dl_-rc:\windows\system32

expandx:\i386\wscntfy.ex_c:\windows\system32
