Hi;
Ok, so I could only afford to pick up a 512 MB ddr pc3200 to put in the empty slot in my computer, but the funny thing is, is that it wasnt empty. I had a 128mb stick in the slot that crucial scan said was empty, so I took it out and moved the existing 512mb stick over to the "empty" slot and installed the new stick in the slot that crucial picks up on. I know the old 512 is good, but crucial scan still says that slot is empty. Whats up? Any ideas? I made sure the stick is properly seated and clipped in.
Thanks for your time on this!!
P.S. I also got an error message before I loaded the new stick. It happened while the computer was idling. It restarted itself. Weird.
System recovered from serious error.

Sorry, my last post totally cut out a bunch of what I put in it. Arrrgh!!
The technical info on the error msg was;
C:\Docume~1\Annie\Locals~1\Temp\Wer2802.dir00\mini031411-01.dmp
C:\Docume~1\Annie\Locals~1\Temp\Wer2802.dir00\sysdata.xml
I pressed send report and it sent me a msg that said the stop error caused by device or driver. It suggested I download and install the latest drivers and scan for viruses but I had slready done that right before I started this thread. It also said to check the hard disk for errors. How do I do that? Also, how did my computer manage to restart itself? That restart thing you told me to uncheck is still unchecked.
I don't know why Crucial didn't see the 128mb of ram. Let's see what Windows sees.
Click your start button
right click "My Computer"
click properties
On the General tab the ram should be listed near the bottom.
You could this use to test the memory.
Download Memtest86+ (you want the 2nd one Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)). Unzip it then create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called ImgBurn which will do this easily.
Boot the CD and run for at least 3 complete passes unless it shows errors sooner than that.
To find the right tool to test the harddrive we need to know the brand.
Click your start button
right click "My Computer"
click properties
Click on the Hardware tab
click Device manager
Click the + beside Disk drives
Please post the name of the harddrive.
While you are in device manager is anything marked with a ! or ? ?
This weekend is fine. Memtest and the harddrive diagnostics can take some time to complete.
You can get the diagnostics for your hard drive HERE. Scroll down a bit to Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows. The instructions are a bit further down the page. Please use the EXTENDED TEST. Please post the results.
Hello,
So far have run the DlgDiag Extended Test. Results are;
Physical Drive 1 - Test Completed Successfully
Extended Test - Pass (with green check mark)
Physical Drive:
Drive 1
Model# WDC WD600BB-75CAA0(IDE)

Capacity 60GB
SMART Status Pass(with green check mark)
Logical Drive:
Drive# C:\
File System NTFS
Total Space 59.99GB
Free Space 17.49GB
Thought I would post this and then run the other tests. Will post as soon as they are done.
Thanks.
hello;
ok, I burned the iso file onto the cd. made sure the cd is first on the boot list in bios. it will not boot from the cd. it boots from the harddrive every time.
I had my son come up and go through the steps with me and he said I did it all correctly and he went into bios and made sure the cd was listed as first for booting, but it still will not boot from the cd. any ideas?
thanks.
Hi annie1863,
Possible problems are the CD is not bootable, the drive isn't working or you may be asked to press a key to boot to the CD.
Try another Cd in the drive and see if the computer wil recognize the cd. Even a music cd will work as a test.
If possible see if you can boot a different computer with the CD.
During bootup watch the screen carefully, sometimes those messages are very quick.
What brand of computer is this?
hello;
when I tried to burn it again, it said there was an error writing to the cd. I tried a music cd in it and it wont do anything. arrgh.
I guess I am going to the computer store to buy another cd burner/player for my computer.
I will pick up different discs too and see if I can get it to work properly this weekend.
I have no idea what the brand is of this computer is. It is one that has been changed and added to so many times, I think it has lost its identity.
Seriously though, when you go to My Computer and right click and go to properties and look on the general tab, it says;
Computer:
AMD Athlon™ XP 1800+
1.54GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
As far as trying to read the messages as they BLAZE on and off the screen..all I can say is 'wow' …even with someone else here to help watch the screen, you just cannot catch the messages. My son said he cannot believe how fast this thing blips through those messages.
Will let you know how the burning of the cd goes when I get the new burner put in.
Thanks.
