Help needed to remove trojan which is preventing any applications from starting including Internet Explorer and showing pop-ups for false warnings and ANTIVIRA antivirus software purchase. My own antivirus is identifying Win32:Cybot-BE trojan but moving to Virus Chest does not remove/kill it. Operating system is XP Prof - SP3 and running Avast antivirus. I am currently using second computer. Would appreciate expert help please. rgds……..bar457
Hello bar457 and :welcome:

My name is JonTom

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

preventing any applications from starting

You will need to use your other machine to download the required tools and then transfer them to the infected system. If you choose to use a USB thumb drive for the transfer, please run the following tool on the uninfected machine first to reduce the chances of cross-infection:

  • Please download Flash Disinfector

    • Click here to download Flash Disinfector and save the file (called Flash_Disinfector.exe) to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Flash_Disinfector.exe icon to run the program and follow any prompts that may appear.
    • The program may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so if prompted.
    • Wait until Flash disinfector has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • Reboot your computer.

Lets try the following and see if it will allow us to run some system scans:

  • rkill

    • Please download rkill (Courtesy of Bleepingcomputer.com).
    • There are 5 different versions of this tool. If one of them will not run, please try the next one in the list.
    • Note: Vista and Windows 7 Users must right click and select "Run as Administrator" to run the tool.
    • Note: You only need to get one of the tools to run, not all of them.

    1. rkill.exe
    2. rkill.com
    3. rkill.scr
    4. WiNlOgOn.exe
    5. uSeRiNiT.exe

Note: You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message.

Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries.

You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click on the DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    [external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOTKIT" entries

Please post the DDS logs and the GMER log in your next reply. If you enconter any problems with the scans come back and let me know.
Hi JonTom
Appreciate you helping me with this. Let me update you.

Before receiving your reply I had run my Avast av scan again and successfully moved the various files (about 7 all relating to the virus) to the virus chest, except one. The last one said it could not find this file (strange, it had found it in the scan), however I found it in the msconfig: start menu, but for the moment have not disabled it. I have also spotted it in the HJT scan below and have underlined it in bold for your attention.
This seems to have removed any visible re-occurance of the virus. All programs seem to work except could not connect IE8.

I then went into IE >tools>internet options>connections>Lan settings…… then disabled all of the proxy selection boxes. This fixed IE and it appears to be working fine again.

However to be sure I have cleared my system of all traces of the trojan, I have completed all of your instructions and post the logs here as requested. Appreciate your review of them please and if you spot anything needs fixing or traces of the trojan.

kind regards
Barry

Hello bar457

Thank you for the log.

We have a few things to take care of but before we do I would like to see the log from GMER. Try running it as described in my first post and if it give you any problems try the methods described below:

  • GMER

    • If you are having trouble getting GMER to complete a scan, please run it again, but this time uncheck everything EXCEPT "Sections" and "C:\".
    • If GMER does not produce a log please try running it from Safe Mode.

    • How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart your computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the "Advanced Options" menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item.
    • Press Enter.

    • If GMER in safe mode does not work, please try Rootkit Unhooker:

  • Rootkit Unhooker

    • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker and Save it to your desktop.
    • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
    • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
    • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest, then Click OK.
    • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
    • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply here.

Note: You may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Please provide the GMER/Rootkit Unhooker log in your next reply :)
Hi JonTom

Hello bar457

Thank you for the GMER log :)

Please work your way through the following steps:

  • Please download OTM

    • Please download OTM by OldTimer by clicking here.
    • Save the file (called OTM.exe) to your desktop.
    • Double click on the OTM.exe icon to run the program. (Note: If you are running on Vista/Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    c:\docume~1\gareth\locals~1\temp\wjawxnlqv

    :Reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "uirgkier"=-

    :Commands
    [Purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Emptyflash]
    [Start Explorer]
    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Click the Moveit! button.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
    • Close OTM.
    • Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File -> Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

  • MalwareBytes AntiMalware:

    • I can see that you have MBAM installed.
    • Double click on your MalwareBytes AntiMalware icon to launch the program.
    • Click on the "Update" tab and then on "Check for Updates".
    • The program will now install the latest Malware definition files.
    • Once complete, click on the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform Quick Scan"and then click on "Scan".
    • Once the program has scanned your computer, a log file will be created in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

    • If the scan detects any Malware-related objects, make sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected" <– Very Important.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer.
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the "Logs" tab.
    • Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart your computer, please do so immediately.

Hello bar457

Thank you for the logs.

Help needed to remove trojan which is preventing any applications from starting including Internet Explorer and showing pop-ups for false warnings and ANTIVIRA antivirus software purchase

Are you able to start IE and connect to the net with the machine now? Please let me know :)
Hi JonTom Yes I fixed this just before I received your first message, see my second posted message. The trojan had altered my connection settings by switching on proxy settings, this was a simple but clever hijack as it prevented internet access to find a resolution, fortunately I run a second machine nowadays for such eventualities. However I found this and unchecked the proxy settings boxes, my connection was restored. Removing the virus files with Avast AV allowed all programs to start. Everything seems to work fine, except that my restored machine is now collecting two copies of every email instead of one going to the other machine as before. Both machines are connected to the same broadband line! However, if I set the restored machine Outlook mail to 'offline' a single copy goes correctly to the other machine. This is odd and I cannot find the cause, do you have anyone there who is hot on Outlook mail collection problems, I assume it is an Outlook cause or maybe something is wrong with the connection settings on the restored machine that gets two copies? rgds…………….bar457

Hi JonTom All done and a big thank you for the time you have put in to help me clean up my trojan hijack, helpers like you are our savour against the scum who mess our computers to sell their own software. It's a shame there is not a team out there who can reverse the evil and track and kill the perpetrators own systems. So, many thanks to you. I will post on the other platform for my browser help as you suggest. kindest regards Barry
