Computer freezes - please help

Hi!
I have a 1.5 y.o. Sony Vaio, it came with XP and was upgraded to Windows 7.
Recently the fan was not working properly and we had it changed. Since then, there are a few problems. The computer will not shut down when I try to shut it down throught the start menu - only if I do a hard shut down by pushing th power button.
It also freezes regularly. I couldn'T see a particular pattern of software that causes the freeze.
It seems to work perfectly, and much faster, in safe mode - it shuts down and everything.
Please help?

Unfortunately, HJT doesn't play nice with the newer operating systems so I'm going to need to see a different log.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.

I'm not seeing any malware… but there are a couple of issues that need correcting.

You are running two Anti-Virus programs. PCTools and AVG. This is a bad thing. They will conflict with each other. In fact, AVG is throwing some errors that may be contributing to your problems. You need to uninstall one of them. I suggest that you uninstall AVG as it is throwing errors… and PCTools is providing your Firewall.

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 23

Once those tasks are completed… let's try this:

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hello again! I hope you guys are told often how great you are for giving advice and time to wanabe nerds like the rest of us. I did as you told, removed AVG and ran the Java program, and then the cache cleaning one. It rebooted just fine, which in itself is an improvement, since it was always having trouble shutting off or rebooting. I'm running the malware scan now, will post the results below. Thanks

Hello again! The Malware program didn't seem to find anything (see log below). I shut off my computer to see if it would work, and it did after installing some Windows updates. The updates installed on startup ('Configuring Windows update') and here I am. Seems like the shut down conflict is resolved - I'll have to use my computer for a few days to see if it also resolved the freezing issues, but I'm pretty confident it at least helped a lot. At this point I'm thinking your problem was created mostly by the conflicts and sometimes updating can do wonders.
