You've helped me before and I hope you can help with mom's computer, an older Dell laptop. It has XP Home, SP3. It is running very slow and cpu usage is high (50-90%). The HD keeps running. Malwarebytes and Superantispyware show nothing. She had Norton 360 installed, but I took that off and replaced it with Microsoft Security Essentials. I increased her 256 mb ram to 1 Gb. Boot is faster but cpu usage is just as high. Available memory is about 550 mb. Hijack This log is below.

Thank You.
Hello, trebor
Welcome to the WhatTheTech Forums. My name is Thomas (Tom is fine), and I will be helping you fixing your problems.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.

  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
    • This is THE Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Push the Quick Scan button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <– Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <– Will be minimized

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop. Link 1 (.exe file) Link 2 (zipped file) Link 3 (.rar file)
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program. Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
– Note: You may get this warning…just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".
Tom, thank you for taking this case. I had a difficult time downloading RKUnhookerLE, but was finally successful at the Bleeping Computer site. I have made a couple of changes since I first posted (replaced Windows Security Essentials with AVG antivirus and removed Superantispyware), but I will not change anything else unless instructed. Here are the results of the scans:

Hi,

Sorry but you have to uninstall AVG again. It will interferer with our tools. After we cleaned this system you can reinstall it, or install another av program :).

Please go here and have a look how you can disable your security software.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

——————————————————————–

Double click on the renamed Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

Hi Tom,

I re-downloaded and installed OTL and RKUnhookerLE. I disabled AVG, but Schrauber.exe (ComboFix) still didn't like it, so I uninstalled AVG. I ran all three programs and the scans are below. The odd thing is that OTL only produced one log this time - no Extras.txt.

OTL.txt

OTL logfile created on: 2/10/2011 8:23:31 PM - Run 3

Hi,

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

How is it running now?
Hi Tom, I will run ESET after work (couple of hours). Am I safe enough without having AVG installed, or should I not worry about that until we are finished cleaning? Thanks.
Hi Tom, It's running better now, much faster boot especially. CPU usage settles down after awhile. The ESET log is below. Doesn't look like it found anything. ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log: OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK # version=7 # iexplore.exe=8.00.6001.18702 (longhorn_ie8_rtm(wmbla).090308-0339) # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.6419 # api_version=3.0.2 # EOSSerial=ecd5827beaa76b449565af2a9b9423bd # end=finished # remove_checked=true # archives_checked=true # unwanted_checked=true # unsafe_checked=false # antistealth_checked=true # utc_time=2011-02-12 04:33:04 # local_time=2011-02-12 11:33:04 (-0500, Eastern Standard Time) # country="United States" # lang=1033 # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 3 # compatibility_mode=512 16777215 100 0 0 0 0 0 # compatibility_mode=1024 16777215 100 0 0 0 0 0 # compatibility_mode=8192 67108863 100 0 0 0 0 0 # scanned=43126 # found=0 # cleaned=0 # scan_time=10075
You can now reinstall AVG :) After that, please open OTL, set the extra registry tab to use safe list and hit the run scan button, post back with the 2 logfiles.
Hi Tom - OTL logs are below. Just an update: when I put the AVG back on, I got the same symptoms – slow boot, heavy cpu usage, and hard drive running like crazy. Are the errors noted in the Extras log a factor here?
Thanks for your continued help.

Hi,

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Rest is looking good :). If you have no more problems, we can start cleaning up our work :).
Hi Tom, Things are looking much better. I only had Viewpoint Media Player to get rid of. I guess I'm ready for the "cleanup". I really appreciate all the time you've put into this. Do you think we can complete it by the weekend, I'm getting some pressure from Mom to release the hostage :)
