Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 2000 Service 2

Dell Dimension DIM 2400
Intel ®
Celeron ® CPU 2.40 GHz
2.39 Ghz, 256 MB of RAM

Unable to open two windows at the same time, takes 10-15 minutes to start up the computer. I was unable to do all of
this from the couples computer because it would not allow me to do all the steps required in a timely manor. So, I have
brought the reports home to send over to you friendly helpers.
Unable to use gmail while I was trying to view your website on their computer. I did notice they did not have sp3.

Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

I understand this computer does not have SP3 on it yet, but let's hold off on doing that until we make sure any malware is addressed.

Give me a bit to look over the logs you have posted and see what I find there. In the mean time, can you please run the following and post the results.

Scan With RootKitUnHooker

  • Please choose one link and download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers and Stealth
  • Uncheck the rest. then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File > Save Report.[/b
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"
Hello Doris, This is Tamee. You are working with me on the Windows XP Home Ed. Did you get the log reading from the Rootit UnHooker that I sent yesterday? I did not know if I sent it the right way or not. Thank you for your help. Tamie
Doris, in the lower right corner it is reading "Low virtual memory" on computer screen. Thank you for your help. I see the entries found by Malwarebytes and while we will remove them in another step, they are not likely the cause of the extreme slowness you've noted. Please make sure to leave Malwarebytes on the machine as we will be using it again.

Note: if the Cure option is not there, please select 'Skip'.

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double Click on TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
  • Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
  • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root directory, root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file in your post.
Good morning. I was hoping you could help me explain to the couple that I am helping the process I’m embarking upon. I understand if I was at my own house it would be a different matter and it would move a bit quicker. But since I am going somewhere else to work on their computer each process takes up time for the both of us. I am not sure how to explain to the couple why all the scans, logs, back and forth. I understand, but I believe putting it in layman terms is the problem. And, then there is the slow computer. I have to do the downloads at my home first, since their computer times out. Then, I take everything over to their house to run and produce the log to send. Which I have to do from my home since the computer times out in the process. I still have to make time to go over there and do the above; can you help me explain them how this works? Thanks, Tamee
In order to properly identify and remove malware we must do scans to look at the various files on a machine. Some scans are simply diagnostic (allowing us to look for and identify potentially bad files) and some are aimed at removing files which may be causing issues on the machine. Malware is constantly evolving and hides in many different places. No one scan can show us everything. In some cases a few simple scans is all it takes to remove malware. In others, it can take many different scans and tools to remove it completely. Every machine is different. There is no set process of steps that can be applied every time. Some scans move quickly and some take longer. But in all cases, the logs from each step must be properly evaluated to determine the next step. From the description you provided, I gather the machine used to run relatively well, and is now performing very badly. This can be caused by any number of things. Certainly, on a machine without all the security patches and updates applied, malware will rank high on the culprit list. Before doing any major service pack updates, it is extremely important to ensure there is no malware hiding on the machine. If there is malware on the machine and significant updates (such as a service pack) are attempted - the update may fail or even greater problems may occur. Once we have removed any malware, spyware, etc., we will then approach the necessary updates. If these don't resolve the problem, then it could be a program conflicts or a hardware issue. However, before looking at these possibilities we must ensure it is not malware. Troubleshooting a slow machine can be a lengthy process. Especially when you are moving between computers it can be a time consuming process.

I see you have Malwarebytes already on your machine. Please run it by double clicking the icon on the desktop.
  • Click on the tab labeled Update and then click on the button Check for updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Today when I boot the computer on it took 10 minutes to boot it up. They had been online a hour before I arrived this afternoon. When I tried to get online at dial-up is took about 5 minutes, after the hand shake about another 10 minutes for the IE to load. During this whole procedure in the lower right corner the error box was up with the "Low Virtual Memory.:" When I got to What the Tech website it took another 8-10 minutes just to log in. To add the reply I sent earlier from their computer probably another 10 minutes. I thought it was important for you to know the time table of just logging into IE and get your response out from their computer. I will do everything you requested first thing tomorrow. You want me to run Malware a second time? I believe it was ran in my submission. I will gladly do it again. Just wanted to check. Thank you for your help.
In the Malwarebytes log you posted previously, it noted "no action taken" on the items it found. You need to re-run it, make sure all the items are selected and then choose Remove selected so that it can remove the items. Hold off on the online scan. Let me check into something and I'll post back shortly.
