Sorry to bother, but my wife's laptop seems incredibly slow and glitchy at times. No obvious messages or anything. It also locks up on occasion (daily). It's an HP pavilion dv6000 running vista. It has a 140 GB harddrive 50 GB of which are free. I just don't know enough to deteremine if the harddrive is going, it has too many processes running, or if it has some malware issues. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if you could point me to a more basic primer on how to approach non-malware related performance issues, that would be appreciated, too. Thanks in advance, Jeff
Hello Jeff and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your logs and help you with solving any malware problems. After we are done, I can point you in the direction of some assistance with other performance related issues if necessary.

It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file unless directed to do so. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

Download and Run DDS by sUBs

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Right-click and choose Run as Administrator on the DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

Scan With RootKitUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click and choose Run as Administrator on the RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers and Stealth
  • Uncheck the rest. then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File > Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"
I can "post" the requested info, but the "attach" fails because of some internet explorer popup. I disabled Norton but don't know what to do about the "blank" page that comes up when I try to do the "attach" Also, a blank page comes up when I try to download Rootkit Unhooker. Sorry for the delayed response, the ice storm brought down the cable line to our house and they just went back up today.

Sorry for the delayed response, the ice storm brought down the cable line to our house and they just went back up today.

No worries. I totally understand. Glad to hear you are back up and running!

If you can't attach, go ahead and copy and paste all the info into your post. If it's too long for a single reply, you can break it up into separate replies if needed.

For RootkitUnhooker, please try a right-click and choose "Save link as" and see if you can access it that way.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further problems with these.
Hi again, Patndoris. Thanks for your patience. I think I've got the DDS and attach completed and in this reply. Will send the Rootkit Unhooker in separate post.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Hi again, Patndoris,

Here's the Rootkit Unhooker report. I think my earlier problems may have been the result of a long day and lack of trying to run those tasks too late at night. Things seem to be relatively straightforward today. Thanks, again,

Jeff

Hi Jeff!

I think you posted the DDS log a 2nd time instead of the RootkitUnhooker results. Can you please post the results of the RootkitUnhooker scan so I can take a look at those before we move forward.

I would suggest that you remove AskToolbar
* It promotes its toolbars on sites targeted at kids.
* It promotes its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites.
* It promotes its toolbars through other companies' spyware.
* It is Installed without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent from the user whatsoever.
* It solicits installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.
* It makes confusing changes to user's browsers - increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit.

Unless you feel strongly that you wish to keep this, I will plan on removing it as a part of what we will do in the next steps.
Sorry for the mis-send. After saving the report was unable to do anything with it. Here is a copy and past from the report tab. If you think I should, I could attach the report. Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Right-click and choose Run as Administrator on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Hi Patndoris,

Malware can hide in many places. Each of the tools we are using looks in slightly different places where it can hide. You are doing great so far and we have removed some malware, but I'd like run one more tool before we move on to the next steps.
