📎Attach.txt📎Attach.txtI am having trouble with a virus or malware on my Vista laptop. I am constantly getting popups that my computer is infected but I know these aren't from my antivirus, I am running AVG, I am also getting directed to a window showing the control panel for Antivirus .net, there is an icon on the taskbar for it. I tried running the OTL tool in normal Windows and got the following: "Security Warning - Application can not be executed. The file otl.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now". <- this is the message I get when trying to launch any programs, including AVG, I can't use the internet as I am constantly redirected. I have disconnected my wireless and am posting on another computer.
I have run the scans in safe mode and the results are following. (I accidently had a couple of windows open when I ran OTL due to my stupid tired brain, hopefully it didn't cause problems)
(oops, just realised I attached my attachment twice, no idea how to delete, I'm not normally this stupid…just tired)

I appreciate any help you can give me on this as I am in over my head.

Please don't attach the scans / logs from these scans, use "copy/paste".

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"ProxyServer"=-

Save this as fixme.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Reboot and describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for giving me a hand with this. I did what you said with fixme.reg in Safemode and restarted…

At first I seemed to be able to launch AVG and its control panel popped up.
The Antivirus .net icon was in the task bar showing a message "Windows reports the computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan your computer. Your system might be at risk now". I think it's almost word for word, I copied down the message as well as I could but it kept disappearing.
Then the wireless connected..
Got a Security Warning "Application cannot be executed. The file wermgr.exe is infected. Do you want to activate antivirus software now"
Getting multiple popups in the bottom left corner about various Infiltration Alerts "Your computer is being attacked by an internet virus…"
Internet Explorer launches but I get an Internet Explorer warning telling me that visiting this website may harm your computer, my homepage is Google. Then I can't close IE. Avg won't launch.

I gave up and restarted, making sure wireless would not connect.

I got more of the same, the first message straight up was from the Antirus .net icon in taskbar with "Windows reports the computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan your computer. Your system might be at risk now"
I left the computer alone & within a minute got a Security Warning "Application cannot be executed. The file rundll32.exe is infected. Do you want to activate antivirus software now"
Then another Infiltration Alert.
I bolded the names of the infected exe files to highlight that these seem to change names frequently. There seems to be a constant stream of Security Alerts & Infiltration Alerts that just keep popping up. It seems to kill just about program I try to open. I can open folders, My Computer, Control Panel etc
Note: if the Cure option is not there, please select 'Skip'.

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Run the scans in normal mode if you can.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please Please copy / paste the scan reults.

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post
I can't run TDSSKiller in Normal mode, or any other program. User Account Control pops up asking for permission but it seems to get killed after that. I did notice that the only time I could bring up the control panel for AVG was after I ran fixme.reg, should I perhaps try that again and keep the wireless disconnected. The blocking seemed to only start again after the wireless connected. Could you advise me on how to disable all script blocking, I'm assuming this means disabling AVG (which I can't currently do in Normal Mode). Does it include User Account Control also? I tried running DDS but either AVG blocked it or the Antivirus .net did.
Yes. I am running another computer through it, connected via ethernet. That is the computer I am currently using, this is my main computer, so far having no problems with it. This computer is running Windows 7 with Microsoft Security Essentials, there have been no alerts from it. The laptop is connected via wireless, I have currently switched off the wireless receiver on the laptop since I had the trouble earlier. the alerts are still popping up with the wireless off.
No, I haven't reset it. Though the power was disconnected overnight. I figured it was more of a computer problem seeing as my main one is working OK.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Download the tools needed to a flash drive or other USB device, and transfer them to the infected computer.

If only safe mode works, then run in safe mode

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Next:

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to iexplore.exe before saving it to your desktop.

If need be, Download the tools needed to a flash drive or other USB device, and transfer them to the infected computer.

Note:
If combofix (iexplore.exe) won't run from the desktop, try running it from the USB device.

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save iexplore.exe to your Desktop

Double click on the iexplore.exe ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Be sure to download any updates.

  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.
