My Ie Has Been Taken Hostage

My home page has been changed to "about:blank". No matter how many times I change it, it reverts back. I also get these bogus little anoying pop-ups that tell my that my computer has been infected with spyware. They all have links on them which I never click. Some of the pop-ups have little cartoon gif's doing sex acts. I do not view porn, but I am not the only user of this computer. Ad-aware and Spybot S&D both find things wrong but neither can fix the problems even though they say they are fixed or quarentined. Norton finds nothing. Windows update and Norton Anti-virus are both up to date. What the heck happened???

Thanks for your help. Here is my log.

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

and hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here the information in the 'Value' field.

Click here or here to download FindnFix.exe (2K/XP only!) by freeatlast. Double-click on the FINDnFIX.exe and it will install a folder called FINDnFIX on your system. Go to that folder and double-click on !LOG!.bat. The program takes a few minutes to collect the necessary information. When done post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
Daemon,

Thanks for your quick reply. I followed your instructions exactly.

Here is the info you requested from the Registrar Lite's value field:

C:\WINNT\system32\kbdna.dll

Here is the log info from FindNFix:

***NOTE*** below that is another HJT log

Thanks

Open the FINDnFIX folder and then open the keys1 folder. Right-click on the MOVEit.bat file and select 'edit'. That will open the file as an empty text file - copy and paste this line into the blank file:

move %WinDir%\System32\KBDNA.DLL %SystemDrive%\junkxxx\KBDNA.DLL

Save the file and close. The next step will cause a restart. Still in the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat. You will get an alert of about 15 seconds before reboot - allow it to reboot.

On restart, open the FINDnFIX folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat. When it is finished, in FINDnFIX folder, there will be a file called Log1.txt - post it's contents in your next reply.

Occasionally when trying to edit the MOVEit.bat file the following error occurs: "Windows cannot find "C:FINDnFIX\keys1\MOVEit.bat. Make sure you typed the name correctly then try again."

If that happens, skip that step and proceed this way instead. In the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat. You will get an alert of about 15 seconds before reboot - allow it to reboot. On restart, open Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32 folder, find the KBDNA.DLL file (it should be visible now). Highlight the file and using top menu, click Edit>Move to folder…

Select C:\junkxxx as destination. Move the file.

Open the FINDnFIX folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat. When it is finished, in FINDnFIX folder, there will be a file called Log1.txt - post it's contents in your next reply.
Daemon,

I followed your instructions again. Below is the log you asked for. I noticed that a new folder was added to my C drive called "junkxxx". Should I do anything with this?

Also, I was reading some of the other posts and read where some people were advised to download and install both SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. I thought I would do this as well to help protect me from this problem in the future. These problems may not be related in any way, but I have never had any trouble downloading and running any other program off the web. With SpywareGuard, the program downloads and installs fine. Then, when I open it for it's first run it gives me an error window telling my that there is a bad file or sector on the disk. With SpywareGuard, it downloads and installs fine and will open, but will freeze up my computer when I try to run it's Live Update command. (I did download and install the missing runtime file that the developers advised for this program to work with Windows 2000). I tried this 3 or 4 times with each program, first deleting the existing program using the Add/Remove Programs feature in windows, then re-downloaded the programs again and starting over with same results respectively each time untill finally I gave up on both and just removed them permanently. Do you think these problems could be related?

Thanks,

wytookay

We can harden you defences once the hijacker has gone - probably not the best idea to try it half way through a fix. Open the FINDnFIX folder again and open the Files2 folder. Double-click on the ZIPZAP.bat. It will quickly clean the rest and will make a copy of the bad file(s) in the same folder (junkxxx.zip) and open your email client with instructions. Simply drag and drop the junkxxx.zip file from the folder into the mail message and submit to the specified addresses.

Please be sure to include a link to this thread in the body of your email. Reboot when done, then delete the entire FINDnFIX folder. Could you click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1 Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log in your next reply.
OK Daemon, I followed your instructions and here is the newest HJT log. What next?

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Reboot when done and you should be good to go - let me know how it is running now.
OK, all done. Everything seems to be fine. Home page is holding and I haven't seen any pop-ups. I am, however, having a flash problem on my ISP's homepage but it's only on their page and I can take that up with their tech staff. I included the newest log in case you wanted to see it. THANK YOU for all you have done. I will be donating to the site. What a wonderful resource you and your group are. It's nice to know there are still people out there who can outsmart the bad guys. Thanks a million.

So what should I install to help prevent this from happening again? SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard? Or, do you recommend other.
