I just got this laptop about 6 months ago. its been great. I have norton antivirus on it and thoought i was safe. obviously i picked up a virus somewhere. it takes about 2 minutes for the computer to realize when a memory stick is plugged in, used to be instatntly, it tkes 5 minutes for itunes to load, used to be instantly. the reason i really know something is wrong is because whenever i try to open norton now, the program crashes… i cant even get into it…

what to do?

another thing, Hijackthis cannot go into the host file… C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

any help is much appreciated.

thanks

Hello schszczo and welcome to WTT.
I'm RedCar92 and my name is Bill, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

  • Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Read the entire procedure
  • It is important to perform ALL actions in sequence.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with me till you're given the all clear. Malware removal can be stressful but we will clean it.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process.

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise, this will be a team effort.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

Please bear with me, I will post back to you as soon as I can.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Hello Shuszczo,
I see that you have the Ask Toolbar installed.
Ask Tool bar has the following qualities"
  • It promotes its toolbars on sites targeted at kids.
  • It promotes its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites.
  • It promotes its toolbars through other companies' spyware.
  • It is Installed without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent from the user whatsoever.
  • It solicits installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.
  • It makes confusing changes to user's browsers - increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit.
You can remove Ask by going to Control Panel -> Programs and Features. Click once on Ask Toolbar the click on uninstall above. If this doesn't work and you want to remove Ask Toolbar let me know in next post and we will attack via a different tool.
