Egypt goes dark…

Jan 28, 2011 - "About a half-hour past midnight Friday morning in Egypt, the Internet went dead. Almost simultaneously, the handful of companies that pipe the Internet into and out of Egypt went dark as protesters were gearing up for a fresh round of demonstrations calling for the end of President Hosni Mubarak's nearly 30-year rule, experts said. Egypt has apparently done what many technologists thought was unthinkable for any country with a major Internet economy: It unplugged itself entirely from the Internet to try and silence dissent…"

Remember back when US and many others wanted to ban Cloning…. and then we had Dolly.

Stating that it would be used only to guard against specific "external" threats, and only isolated to the threat target area.
Also stating that the provisions could only be executed subject to Congressional and Court review….

Yeah Right.
That would be like having a personal home defense weapon unloaded, disassembled, in locked storage, with a locking trigger guard in place.
Why even bother?
"Oh, wait just a minute before you break that window, so I can get my gun."

If it is provisioned to be done… it will happen.

Libya cuts off Internet
- http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/921…ff_the_Internet
February 18, 2011 - "With violence escalating, Libya is pulling the plug on its Internet connection. Libya's main Internet service provider, General Post and Telecommunications Company, began to cut Internet access on Friday, said Earl Zmijewski, general manager with Internet monitoring company Renesys. "They started pulling the plug around 23:18 UTC today and are currently largely off the air," he said via e-mail. That was 1:18 a.m. Saturday, local time. Libya appears to be taking its cue from Egypt, which cut off all Internet access at the end of January as it was roiled by street protests calling for political reform. In similar fashion, thousands of Libyans took to the streets in the city of Benghazi this week in protests that have led to 46 killings in the past three days, according to Amnesty International. As the situation has escalated, Internet traffic has been cut, making it difficult to get a picture of the situation on the ground. Libya is much smaller than Egypt, with fewer networks to unplug, and it appears that this has made the job of cutting Internet access much simpler…"
