After the basketball game, someone has to clean out the coliseum. Trash needs picked up, Waste baskets need emptied. Aisles need swept. This job falls to Alan, Brad, Carol, and Dana. They have been taking turns performing this task. Working independently, each has logged the following times to complete the job.
Alan = 3:00
Brad = 3:20
Carol = 5:00
Dana = 6:00
If they were to all work together… How long would it take the team to clean the Coliseum?
i think i've got the correct answer but will post it on wednesday to give others a chance to work it out, or will post my answer if someone else answers the same as i've got.
This is a complete stab in the dark because it SEEMS too easy lol, but here goes.
The average time taken by each individual is 4 hours and 20 minutes.
Divide that by 4 people working together and you get 1 hour and 5 minutes.
So Im GUESSING 1 hour and 5 minutes ??????

Oh… I like that answer… but it wasn't what I was looking for. In this case..Alan, Brad, Carol, and Dana are the cleaning team.
My last stab then Im giving up and going to bed and leave it for somebody else to do thier head in
If we take the 3.20 not as 3 hours 20 minutes but 3.2 hours (being 3 hours and 12 minutes) I come up with it taking the CLEANING team 1 hour 3 mins to complete the job.

i worked it out using %ages..
eg.. what %age of the stadium would each person clean after x amount of time..
when all the %ages added together = 100% then x is the correct answer.
Ok so in that case, in 1 hour Alan would have done 33.34%, Dana would have done half that at 16.66%, Carol would have done 20% and Brad would have done 30% so then the answer would be 1 hour??? MAYBE??? I GIVE UP! 1.30am and time for bed
my answer
60 minutes.
alan would do 33.33%
brad would do 30%
carol would do 20%
dana would do 16.67%
making a total of 100% cleaned in 60 minutes.
i did the same as your first answer chrissy, worked out the average, but as we know averages aren't accurate but it did get me in the ballpark for a time to start working out the %ages from.
