Hi,

A friend has asked me to help fix his laptop. It is randomly playing through the speakers an advert about dettol and when IE is used it redirects to various pages like 'teenspeak.com'. It is running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have tried running and cleaning with malware bytes but it seems to be a persistent little virus/malware. Malwarebytes picked up vundo and lots of entries for my.web.search. I could do with someone walking me through the cleaning process. Any help muchly appreciated.

Hello campington and :welcome:

My name is JonTom

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

Please work your way through the following steps:

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Right click on the DDS icon and select "Run as Administrator" to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    [external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Right click on GMER.exe and select "Run as Administrator" to run the program. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Please post the DDS logs and the GMER log in your next reply. If you have any trouble with the scans come back and let me know.
Hello campington

I can see that ComboFix has been run on this machine.

While you may see ComboFix being used quite often and without incident, the tool should not be run unsupervised (as stated in the Disclaimer that is first displayed by ComboFix when you run the tool).

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

That being said, the log produced by ComboFix contains important information for us.

Kindly post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt along with the DDS attach.txt log.
Hello campington

Thank you for the logs. I am assuming that you still have ComboFix on your desktop.

Please work your way through the following steps:

  • P2P Programs:

    • P2P programs are a major source of Malware infections.
    • From your log I see you have µTorrent and BitTorrent. We do not pass judgment on file-sharing, however we must inform you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your system will always make you more susceptible to Malware infections.
    • The use of P2P programs may be contributing to your current situation, and you would certainly be doing yourself a favour by removing them.
    • If you wish to keep the program(s), please do not use them until your computer is cleaned.
    • Information regarding the risk of using these programs can be found from here and here.
    • It is strongly recommend that you uninstall any P2P programs you have on your system.
    • To do this, Click on the "Windows Orb" (bottom left hand corner of your screen), then on "Computer" and then on the "Uninstall or Change a Program" tab.
    • A list of currently installed programs will be displayed.
    • Find the "µTorrent" and "BitTorrent" programs, click on them once and then click on the "Uninstall" button.
    • If you are prompted to re-boot your computer to complete the uninstall please do so.

      PLEASE NOTE:
    • Even if you are using a P2P program that is deemed safe, it is only the program that is safe. Any files that you receive using a "safe" P2P program may be infected with Malware. The malware writers use P2P file-sharing as a major conduit to spread infected files.

  • Please work through the following steps

    • Hold down the Windows key (has the Windows symbol on it) and press the "R" key. A Run box will open. Type in Notepad then click on "OK").
    • NOTE: Do not Use Wordpad or any other text editor except Notepad or the script will fail.
    • Copy and Paste the text in the quotebox below into the open Notepad window:

      DirLook::
      C:\7723177660adb00aa6ed1623c9ffb76e
      C:\7b33685568ddea572bcafa7d

      Folder::

    • Save this as "CFScript.txt" (including the quotation marks), change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

      [external image: Posted Image]
    • If ComboFix notifies you that an update is available, please allow it to install.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
    • Once the log is produced, re-engage your resident anti virus.

  • BOOTKIT Remover

    • Please download BOOTKIT Remover by clicking here and save it to your desktop.
    • NOTE: This is a rar file. If you do not have a program to open it then download and install Peazip
    • Extract Remover.exe to your desktop.
    • Right click Remover.exe and select Run as Administrator (Vista/Win 7) or Double click (XP) to run the tool.
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
    • Right click on the screen and select > "Select All".
    • Press Control+C.
    • Now open notepad and press Control+V.
    • Please post this log in your next reply.

Please post the ComboFix log and the Bootkit remover log directly into your reply (no need to attach them).

Also, please let me know how the machine is running now and if you are still receiving the audio adverts.
Hi JonTom, I attempted to run Combofix but the system kept blue screening. Please see below. I booted into safe mode with networking and got it to run eventually. Hope i did the right thing. 1st attempt - Blue screen 2nd - BLS 3rd - Safe Mode with networking - freeze 4th - Safe mode with networking - success Update ComboFix? - yes Combofix will now restart - OK - Blue screen 5th - Safe mode with networking - Success, plse see log. I ran the rootkit remover. Plse see log. After running the rootkit remover the adverts carried on being played through audio. I have also noticed there are two iexplore processes running in task manager when no IE windows are open.
Hello campington

Thank you for the logs.

After running the rootkit remover the adverts carried on being played through audio

Thank you for letting me know.

Please do the following:

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window similar to this should open on your desktop:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

  • If you are prompted with options, enter N at the prompt and press Enter
  • Press Enter again
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your deskop. Please post the contents of that file.
Hi JonTom, I'm taking this laptop over to my friends later so he can back everything up. Its just so cluttered with programs and performance is being affected and i'm starting to think a clean vista install is the way to go. Would you recommend a clean install? Also, according to MBRcheck the boot record is clean so am i right in saying a clean install would get rid of this malware problem? Regards Camp
Hello campington

The MBRCheck log does indeed look okay.

Would you recommend a clean install?

In order to ensure that any and all malware is removed I would recommend a complete reformat and reinstall. A little more work, but the only way to be completely sure that everything is gone.

While the MBR appears to be okay, the symptoms you describe clearly indicate a problem (which, curiously enough, tend to be associated with infected MBRs). I am more than happy to try and help you clean the machine, but if you are already backing up data, a reformat and reinstallation would certainly solve the problem.

General information about performing a reformat and reinstallation can be found here.

Please let me know what you intend to do :)
Hi Jontom, I've spoken to my friend and he agrees a format/fresh install is the best and quickest way forward. I do have a question though. When i ran the first rootkit remover it reported an uknown MBR but MBRcheck reported a good MBR with SHA checksum. Do you know why this is? Also if i do a full format does my MBR get formatted too? I just want to be sure there is no trace of the malware. Regards Camp
Hello campington

Do you know why this is?

Bootkit remover detected the OEM installed MBR that is used by DELL machines, and listed it as "non-standard" (which it is). However, non-standard does not mean infected, and the clean status of the MBR was verified with MBRCheck. Its nothing to worry about :)

A full reformat and reinstallation will remove all of the malware from the machine. Just be very careful about what you put back onto the machine once it is reformatted.

Best wishes
JonTom
