The real time scanning of your McAfee is the only one that is likely to "squawk". You should be good to go. If a "warning" pops up that says something is trying to access your computer… just allow it. That is the reason for shutting off the real time scanning. If you don't, you'll get a bunch of pop up warnings that are very annoying… and if you don't allow them, the scan won't run correctly.
I"m seeing speeds of 9KB downloading the esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe program It's only 2.5 MB - files of that size usually transfer lightening fast. Is this normal for the eset site?
This wasn't the scan! This was just downloading the installer so I could run the scan because I use Firefox. I've switched to IE since I couldn't get the download to work
I wonder if someone has targeted eset.com… I can't even get the active-X control to download. I need to go run some errands, so I have to stop for now. WIll come back to this later.
Thank you for your patience. I had to address an emergency personal issue yesterday. Today I followed your steps again - disable McAfee live scanning, right-click and "Run As Administrator" for IE, go to the ESET site, agree to license. Try to get the active-X control. And today, unlike the day before yesterday, I was actually prompted to download the Active-X control. I did so, and set up the check boxes as you described, clicked start. It only took a few minutes to download the virus definitions. Now it is scanning. It' been scanning for 6 minutes + Is there a limit on the file size this scanner can open? Some archives might be very large. It seems to be jammed up on a large file. How do I know it is actually doing anything? (I'm posting this from a different computer) Will let you know when scan is done. thanks.
Linda Murphy,

That's a good thing.

I really don't think your issues are being caused by malware. I think it's time to have you go to the Windows forum and let the Tech Team run a couple of tests. This really sounds like overheating to me… but there are other causes that it could be. When you post over there, please provide a link back to this thread so that they will have access to your information here. Also be sure in your first post there to give them as much information as you can about your computer - make, model, etc…

But first… a little cleaning up.

  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Make sure that you have restored any security programs that you disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:

I enabled real-time scanning on McAfee and turned scheduled scans back on. Also, I'm doing a full scan using McAfee right now. It has found 2 tracking cookies and fixed them. McAfee is a lot of overhead and doesn't have all the customization options I'd like, but it seems to be getting the job done.

I have not read these pages yet. I will read them this evening.

If I have questions about them, would I post them here?

Again, thank you for all of your help over this past week.

Linda
When you start a topic in the windows forum… you can also ask questions there… but I'll keep this topic open a day or two so you can post questions back here if you choose to.
