Click the image to enlarge it
    • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
    • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
    • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

    THEN

    Download OTL to your Desktop
    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Select All Users
    • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

      netsvcs
      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
      /md5start
      explorer.exe
      winlogon.exe
      Userinit.exe
      svchost.exe
      /md5stop
      %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
      c:\system volume information|_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE;true;true;true /FP
      CREATERESTOREPOINT

    • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Did you upgrade this system from windows 98 ?

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
I bought the laptop with Windows XP on it, so I don't know if it was upgraded before they sold it, or if it was the original software. I downloaded ComboFix successfully, and it installed the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, but every time I try and run a scan on Combo Fix it starts off fine, but takes a long time (I left it for 2 hours once) and whenever I come back, it has frozen my computer. All of my anti-virus software has been disabled. Please let me know if there is something else that can be interrupting the scan. Thanks for all your help so far :)
OK we will go a different route first

Download AVPTool from Here to your desktop

Run the programme you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

First we will run a virus scan

On the first tab select all elements down to Computer and then select start scan
Once it has finished select report and post that.

[external image: Posted Image]

Do not close AVPTool or it will self uninstall, if it does uninstall - then just rerun the setup file on your desktop

Now an analysis scan

Select the Manual Disinfection tab
Press the Gather System Information button
Once done Open the last report saved folder then attach the zip file to your next post zip
The file is located at C:\Users\your name\Desktop\Virus Removal Tool\setup_9.0.0.722_05.01.2011_20-34\LOG\avptool_sysinfo.zip

I attached the other zip file.
At the moment I can see nothing that would cause combofix to fail. All other programmes whilst we try to track this down run very fast :)

Dependant on this I may need to reset the MBR to windows XP

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
